Looking at a 2003 Kountry Star, issues?
Hey folks, new to Newmar, but know the reputation. What kind of issues should I be aware of with this vintage Kountry Star? We are downsizing and simplifying from a Tiffin 42' Allegro Bus. Thanks for any and all inputs!

we had a 2003 KSCA (Workhorse gasser) and put 98,000+ miles on it over 7 years. The coach was virtually trouble free except for a leaking slide-out gear motor which they replaced under warranty. Many days I wish we had never traded.
Even if you are looking at a KSDP, the house will be almost identical, and I believe you'll enjoy many happy years of use.

I own a 2003 KSCA gasser on Workhorse chassis couldn't ask for a better riding coach.
If its a gas coach here is a Brochure and Owners Guide for you.
In my signature below the QT's links will have many items that will cover the Newmar coach.
There was a brake recall that should be done by now by previous owner or the dealer.
By now the seams should be receiving new caulking because most likely the old caulk would be drying out and needs new to keep moisture from entering the coach.
Most people will E-BOND tape all the seams on the roof seams to prevent any water entering from the roof seams.
You will need to check tires and if the coach has been used most systems should be in working order if not you can use this link to help get them that way.
Good luck in your quest.

Thanks! We're actually looking at diesels, but all of the info is helpful! Hearing from pleased owners is always a good thing.

Good most of what was said applies to a DP as well and I changed the Owners Guide to a DP one.
Most Newmar owners are always pleased check out these threads in QT's # 3.
Same good luck applies also.

in 2003, the KS product literature contained both KSCA and KSDP models. About the only difference in the house portion was the placement of the entry door. Same colors, fabrics, furniture, etc. I'm not trying to minimize the significant differences between gasser and DP chassis features, but as I posted, the house is identical construction.

We have a 2007 KSDP that we love. I've seen several older than ours that are basically the same but have not been in a 2003. Ours has solid wood cabinets and a 400:hP Cummins and I think every option Newmar offered that year except hydraulic jacks. Might be a little ole fashion, but I really like the basic coach stuff. Things like gas furnace regular water heater etc. Much simpler to work on less things to go wrong. Ours has 4 slides and has been very reliable, great floor plan. Only thing I'd like better is better fuel mileage than 7mpg. But oh well still love it.

We have a 04 KSDP with ISB Cummins. In ten years we have had a turbo sensor go bad, the automatic transfer switch go bad and a Freightliner air up valve go bad on the air ride. Thats about it. We have crossed the USA 8 times and not been left stranded. We have had issues with HWH jacks slow to return but most coaches have had this issue at one time or other.
The diesel is or leaves the coach a tad underpowered but we tow a 4000 lb toad usually. We have crossed some of the highest passes in the USA with the toad attached and no problems. I would see if a Cat 330 is available. On the other hand we get decent fuel mileage. The other thing about the Cummins ISB is it powers all those Dodge Rams so you get advantage of scale.
The standard Sony TV is crap, and you should replace it with a flat screen if it hasnt been replaced already.
All in all, the coach has been all that we expected.
