Looking at a Monaco

I've been looking to move up to a Class A from our Class C. Been kind of hung up on Tiffin & Newmar. How do you compare the newer (2013+) Monacos to these 2?

How does the MAXX FORCE 10 compare to Cummings & CAT?

I'm looking at a Monaco Knight 38PFT.

Thanks,
Steve

Cummins & Cat = good, I'd stay away from the Maxx Force. I'd also favor Tiffin & Newmar over Monaco.

What ever you get, do yourself a favor, and get a side radiator, and a diesel generator!
Don't know much about the Maxx Force 10, but i would only get a Cat or Cummins! Good luck in your search! Rail!

Brand Selection:
We chose Newmar in 2015 because the Monaco brand was trying to transition from Navistar ownership to REV group which owns Fleetwood and American Coach and it was not a smooth transition.
If you are looking at a MaxxForce engine unit, it was built by Monaco when they were owned by Navistar.

MaxxForce Engines:
You should move this question over to the Monaco Forum.
That group is very smart, very active, and very familiar with the MaxxForce engine.
We had a Holiday Rambler (Monaco Brand) for several years and the Monaco group on iRV2 was awesome to get information from.

Good Luck.

Cat engines went out of on the highway use as of 2009. Max Force engines will be far fewer then Cummins and have more problems and service issues. Cummins is the clear choice for diesel power.

Well, not so for the 2007 EPA Cummins ISX!

Any Monaco with a Maxx Force engine was built by Navistar during their brief ownership of the Monaco brands. There weren't many coaches built during this period but the owners I know with the engine are happy with the MF10. They were also still built on the well respected Roadmaster chassis.

I would stay away from Monaco with or without the Maxx Force engine. It's a multi purposes engine like Cat, but service facilities are not as wide spread and essentially any diesel shop can work on Cummins. We are a multiple Newmar purchaser, but would buy Tiffin too, if they had a model we preferred. None of them are 100% perfect, but having owned two Winnebagos and one American Coach, all new, we've learned from our mistakes.....

IF you decide to purchase 2008 or older, I would rate Monaco even or above Newmar and Tiffen for value. You will get more coach for your dollars spent.

If you decide to purchase newer than 2008, I would add Entegra to your search.

I would avoid any coach with a Maxx Force Navistar engine. Navistar has been central in several different engine design failures in the last 20 years. Google Navistar lawsuits and you will see the current EPA issues with Navistar engines as well as the Ford diesel class action lawsuit issues.

Best of luck!
