Microwave filter?

Tonight for the first time the microwave started making a loud muffling sound and not heating the food. The dialogue box flashed with a message that the filter needs to be replaced. Did not know a microwave had a filter. It is a Whirlpool but cannot find a model number. Any idea where the filter might located would be appreciated.
