Microwave Sparking?

The Whirlpool microwave in our Ventana LE did some sparking while using the microwave today. There was nothing in it except for the glass piece and a plastic bowl. It left a burning smell also. I unplugged it just in case.

Has anyone had this issue before? We used the convection mode this morning for biscuits with no issues.

Did you have any food in the glass and plastic piece. I assume you did!. I don't believe you should use the microwave without cooking anything.

Did the glass have any decoration painted on it? I know gold decorative paint will cause sparks. Where were the sparks? Around the cookware inside? Coming from the sides or top on the outside? Etc.

The glass I am referring to is the part that comes with the microwave that rotates. There was a small piece of meat in the small plastic bowl. My wife said it looked like it was under the glass tray.

The plastic with the little piece of meat was under the glass tray? Sounds like you both need to read the instructions on how to use the microwave and its limitations. Running it without anything to absorb the microwaves thus heating the target food will cause sparks and ruin the unit. So far, none of your comments are making sense to me so help us out so we can help you.

Just went thru the light show in the microwave at home. Looked at the manuf date and it was May 2001 - so we just bought a new one.

If it is sparking when used as you have always used it, I would not use it any longer and just buy a new one.

I would remove the glass turntable. There is a plastic ring underneath that can also be removed. Clean them both very well, especially the little wheels on the plastic ring. Dry it well, and reinstall it. I suspect that a tiny piece of foil has gotten stuck under there. Try microwaving a cup of water and see if it happens again.

The bowl was NOT under the glass tray the sparking was.

Remove the glass turntable and the wheel thingy it sits on. Put some water in a microwave safe bowl or coffee mug. Microwave the water for a few seconds and see what happens.

If it sparks call a repairman or replace.

If it does not spark put the wheel thingy back in without the glass turntable and try again with the water.

If it sparks investigate the wheel tray and see if there is any exposed metal.

Replace the wheel tray if that's the source of the sparking.

Troubleshooting requires testing one thing at a time starting with the easiest most obvious things first.

Hopefully it is a simple fix.

"ruebenray".....Wow....your post went from a question about the Whirlpool microwave to how you need lessons on how to microwave meat!

I think I would do as "tcq" suggested and clean everything. A piece of debris could have gotten under the turntable during travel. If it does it again, I think it's time for a new unit.

I put a scratch off lottery ticket in a microwave. Looks like a lightning storm in there.

If they're not a winner, most just throw them away, not try to blow them up.

Long story, but a gag on a co-worker.
