Motorhome Battery Charging Tow
I don’t thing my motorhome is charging the battery of the tow. Had a repairman come out today and he said that there is voltage coming out of the cable that goes to the car. when I check voltage on car unplugged to motorhome it reads 12.45, than I plug to motorhome and it is still 12.45. I thought it should be higher when plugged to motorhome, repairman said no. Any thoughts?

If Motorhome is running, the volts should go up to about 13 volts.

This may sound like a dumb question, but funnier things have happened. The car has been wired to accept the charge from the MH, right?

Right, you have to continue your umbilical to the tow battery.

It is all in one wire - I plug into coach and plug other end into car - lights work

Car is wired, however I had to change the cord that plugs into MH and car due to road damage - bought an over counter cord - have volts coming out of cord

We know, all the wires are in the 7 wire cable. However, if it connects to a 4 wire on the TOAD, the battery is not connected! You need at least a 5 wire on the TOAD for this to work. The others are pointing out that a standard light setup for a TOAD generally does not include wiring the charge line from the coach to the TOAD battery, generally through a 20 amp breaker. You need to confirm that this has been done when the TOAD was wired. Your voltages indicate that it hasn't been connected.

OK, but what which pin. There really is no standard for the battery charge function on a 6 way. I used the center, many do, but there are variations.

The wiring diagrams I have seen use Pin 4 for battery.

The more you search the more different layouts you see. Time for a voltmeter! If you probe the toad socket, only one wire will have 12 volts on it...coming from the battery.

If I remember correctly either Blue Ox or Roadmaster sells a little kit that has wiring and fittings to splice into the connector on the tow end and routs to your toad battery. I believe it even has an inline fuse, but I could be mistaken. I think it was about 20 bucks..

...and the wiring for the toad battery charger must have a diode to keep the toad battery from charging the motorhome. With this diode will likely be a fuse. If that fuse is blown, charger no workie. How's your fuse?

Diode is optional. Many just use an auto reset 20 amp breaker...$12.00. However, if there is a fuse and it is blown, that would be the problem.
