Being I don't have a Newmar manuel I need some help.. This is my water pump (duh Lee) anyway there is a hose attached to the incoming side (I Think) and it is just coiled up going nowhere. It has a brass plug in the end of it... What is this for and what is it used for?

Hey Lee,
Hope this finds you doing well today.

Your picture, I must say, is pretty good. It helps a little to see what folks are asking about.

Pumps only have two ports: inlet and outlet. The inlet should be plumbed to the fresh water tank. I can't understand why there would be a coiled hose w/ a plug on the inlet side. Such a setup would not allow water to be pumped from the fresh water holding tank. I can only assume that the pump is pumping water for you. If it's not, then the inlet hose was not installed into the fresh water tank.

Oh, one thing it could be, if there's a deverter valve, is for the winterization of your plumbing system. Check closer to see if there is a valve that shuts off the fresh water tank pickup and opens the hose which you say is coiled and plugged. It could very well be the anti-freeze pickup hose.

The coiled up hose should be the winterizing intake line. It is on the input side of the pump and is used to bring anti-freeze into the system without going into the tank. To use it you shut off the main intake, remove the plug in the coiled line and open the valve, if any between the coiled hose and the pump. Put the end of the coiled hose into a bottle of RV antifreeze and start the pump. Running the taps inside will now fill the lines with the antifreeze.

Oh yeah OK I can see where it would serve as a inlet for winterizing. There is a valve that will isolate the water and I can see how it will pick up anti-freeze. Me being in California I didn't think about that... Thanks so much...

The pump is a 2.8 does you have anyone have any recommendations on installing a bigger quieter one?

Things are going good here the weather is turning hot so here comes the 100 degree days of summer here in the big valley.... Darn it

ShurFlo makes the SmartSensor 5.7 pump. It's quieter and puts out more water. Be sure you also replace the inlet strainer because it requires a larger one.

I've seen that recommendation before. I was considering a replacement sometime later on as well. Taking out the original and keeping it as a spare. The 5.7 would a nice modification for any RV.

The 100 degree weather out in that part of CA would be hot for sure. We here in East TN are experiencing some of the chilliest weather in years this time of year. We are having 45 degree nights and 60 degree days!!!! Normal highs are usually in the mid to high 70's. I would welcome a touch of your weather here for a day or two. Thank goodness we're not experiencing what New England is having...a foot of rain!!!!

I am going to check into the Shurflo SmartSensor 5.7... All I really need to do is talk the little woman into spending the money.. I am sure I can once I tell her the shower wil have more water ha ha ha ha

Yes, that hose going nowhere is for sucking antifreeze into your water lines. Be sure to shut off the flow to your hot water tank so you only put antifreeze through the house lines.
As to another pump, I installed a high pressure/capacity shurflo and it works great! My only advice is to wrap the outlet side clip that hold outlet line onto the pump with strong tape such as duct tape or one of the variety of waterproof siliconized tapes available. I have twice had my outlet clip pop loose and flood my storage compartments with many gallons of water while hooked up to the city water line. One time the pump was actually running and sprayed water across the motorhome and filled the storage compartment under the kitchen slide. The last time the city water line pressure was only strong enough to partially loosen the fitting and fill the storage area below the pump. I understand this same thing has happened to a few other folks too. While the clips make it quick to change out the pump or a line, they are a poor replacement for a legitimate hose clamp.
One additional comment, get a larger capacity filter to service the larger capacity pump.

Can't believe there using 2.8 gpm pumps when the 5.7 is less than $60 more! We use 110v pumps on our boat with a 12v for backup. Will add to my list of changes before ordering. Good input keep it coming! Another one is an automatic oil change system(will add that one myself).
