Parallax ATS 503 Color Coded Wiring to Shore Power and Onan Quiet Diesel 7500

Hello all,

I received my new Parallax ATS 503 yesterday but it rained all day. So I tackled removal of the old one and installation of the new one today. I am happy to say that I now have a working ATS.

Please note* if you are wiring a Parallax ATS 503 make sure you install the ground wires first or you will have to remove all other wiring to get to the ground lugs. Ask me how I know. Also, if you are using these photos as a guide you are on your own and I assume no responsibility or liability for your mistakes in your wiring or equipment smoking profusely.

I was asked to take photos of the installation and label them. I was also asked to take voltage readings with all wiring in place and voltage was applied to the switch.

L1 - 123.2 Volts and L2 - 123.1 Volts from the generator with the relays on the ATS energized.

L1 - 123.0 Volts and L2 124.1 Volts from shore power with the relays on the ATS energized.

Wiring in progress

Wiring inside the ATS completed

I see that you split up the gen. neutrals to 2 connection points.

Was that per the instructions.

Yes, I had my doubts about L2 from the generator getting voltage and being able to activate. I called Parallax and their engineering department verified that I should use the generator auxiliary lug. I don't know that L2 would have been affected but I changed it anyway.

I am shipping back the old unit today. Now I hold my breath until they figure out if the old one was faulted from a voltage spike. If so, I have more fish to fry. That $315 is fluttering around in my billfold for now.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I felt it necessary to show the finish wiring and title those last photos so people could find it in a search. I had a heck of a time finding any previous wiring photos of actual wiring of the "Parallax ATS 503" when I searched.

Well done, Charlie. Your approach to this whole issue has been stellar! And, your follow-up is much appreciated.

A bulldog with a bone has nothing on you when it comes to persistence. And, you have left a lasting legacy for the next person who runs into a similar problem. A tip of the cap to you, Charlie!
