Needing the gauge of wire to use on my surge protector.

I am having to replace the transfer switch and my new one doesn't have a surge protector built in like my old one had. Going with a hard wired surge protector so I'm needing to buy about 2 foot of wire to make the install. What gauge of wire do I get? It's going in a 08 madp with 50 amp service.

#6 awg for 50amps. ~CA

If you want a cable then 6/4 (6 awg x 4 conductors) (some RV's use 6/3 + 8/1 but 6/4 will work for all 50a RV's)

Do you have a cord reel ?

I don't and when hard wiring in my surge guard , used a length of the power cord to hook things up . Used about 3' over all . but still have lots of power cord .

Yes but didn't want to use off my reel. Might need that 2 foot sometime. Lol

Since you are hard wiring it in I would use 3 #6 solid copper and 1#8 Copper for the ground, put in flexible conduit. That is assuming you have room, as the conduit will require a little space. But you can buy both 90 and 45 degree clamps to come out of the boxes. Solid wire bends easier and stays in place, plus has less heat build up than stranded wire.

The biggest issue is buying such a short section. An electrical supply might sell a few feet off a roll but a big box store is going to have rolls only. Probably 25 feet, and you definitely want all three colors and a solid copper ground. An electrician would probably be a better bet. The often have short sections left off a roll. At today copper prices, they don't throw any away.

Home Depot sells a 6 gauge 4 wire (looks like your power cord). You can buy it by the foot.

I found 6 gauge 4 wire today sold by the foot. I got 4 feet to be on the safe side.

Forgot to say that the space is pretty tight so I didn't want to go with solid copper wire, needing more flexibility.

Good choice on wire. Flexible wire is best on any type of vehicle where you have movement large or small.
