New Improved Engine Air Cleaner

I just installed a new Baldwin air cleaner I purchased from the Filter Barn. When I took the old one off it was loaded with dead stink bugs which are a problem here in Michigan. The old Eco-Lite filter had the typical pleated paper inside. However, the Baldwin had a heavy metal mesh screen over the paper pleats. It looks like a pretty good design improvement which should stop any degraded paper element from being sucked into the turbo.

New Improved Engine Air Cleaner

Baldwin has had that design for a long time. We had it in farm machinery filters in the 1970s. It is great, we used to take them out and clean then for many times before replacing them. Then when you cut them up they were still intact and working, no chance of degrading and going through the turbo or into the engine. All JMHO

I didn’t realize that design had been around that long. I don’t have any connection with Baldwin but going forward that is the only filter I will use. One less thing to worry about (wet or poorly glued paper element getting sucked into the turbo).

Last year, I cut an Ecolite open to see how it was made and would it come apart. Obviously, the metal mesh is good, but I found the glued nylon was darn near impossible to disassemble. I had to cut it with a saw.

The think the big thing is to change these air filters every two years, no matter what the brand.
