New Owner and What is this?

Hi fellow owners. We're a proud owner if a 1999 Dutch Star 3858 DP. Ours is the Spartan with the Cummins 8.3L engine. I love the new (to us) RV and enjoy driving it so much more than our old Gasser we had. We're heading to New Orleans this weekend for a nice getaway... Easter in NO...lol

So our nick-name for the Dutch Star is the "Death Star", and HIS name is Vader. So we refer to hims as Vader all the time.

The Oldmar has been an adventure so far... I replaced the back 6 feet of roof decking (was fully rotten) as the prior owner didn't care for the RV. Then put the old roofing back down (even though it had small holes) and then put another layer of new roofing over the old and sealed everyting. It seems to be doing the trick so far. I plan to do a full Liquid EPDM treatment to the whole roof in the next month or two.

So I have a question...

In the front of the RV, below the passenger seat area, there is this device. It makes a buzzing noise when the RV is running... like a constant BZZZZZZZZZZZ. Does anyone know what it is? It looks like it's missing a vacuum hose on the left side but there was no missing hose to connect it to.

I am not sure if I have one on my 2000 MA, if I do, I never noticed it, I will have to look........I am going to guess it is a Vacuum pump for the dash HVAC controls........

YUP--vacuum pump for dash HVAC controls [no vacuum produced by a diesel]. Shouldn't run all the time--only at start-up and occasionally thereafter, as needed. Sounds like a vacuum leak if its running all the time. Vacuum pump needs a exhaust port to dump air from creating a vacuum--the open hose connection is likely the exhaust port.....

What you have is an Evan Tempcon , dash HVAC unit , and the vacuum pump that runs it.

I have the original manuals with my coach for the system ; such as they are ; they leave a lot to be desired as far as wiring and vacuum system repair.

Parts are available through this web site.

Wink Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone, I will see if it runs for a while and then shuts off or not. I didn't check the "length" of time that it was running. I just know it was kind of loud and I was upgrading the headlights to HID's anyway so I noticed it.

The HID upgrade made a MONSTER difference. The original headlights were aweful (to me). I went with the 35w lights because I read in some places where the 55w HIDs melted parts of the headlight.

What was the brand of the HID's?

I went with the OPT-7

I went with the OPT-7 HID conversion kit. You can find them easily on Amazon. I bought a set of Opt-7 HIDs for my Chevy volt and they worked really well for the last 2 years... Boy was I glad I did this. I'm on a road trip to New Orleans right now and I just drive 4 hours tonight and the lights were awesome!
