New Sealant question

Hello all,
I have a 2022 Newmar Baystar. I cleaned the roof this weekend and noticed the sealant around the shower skylight is cracking all the way around. All the other sealant looks good so I am not sure why just this skylight. Anyway, I feel it should be re-sealed. Can someone please advise the best way to remove the old, the best way to prep for the new and what product to use to re-seal.
Thank you for your continued help.

Jeff

Hello, Jeff.

Can't tell you why the sealant on the skylight seems more failure prone than other sealant spots, but your observation is mine as well... the skylight needs more attention vs other roof sealant points.

I have removed and replaced the sealant on my 2018 Bay Star shower skylight (about two years ago). The maintenance manager at the shop I use in Tucson AZ suggested SikaFlex 715. I carefully removed the old sealant with a putty knife and mineral spirits, then applied the new. This year I had the roof professionally examined by the same maintenance staff that has worked my coach since new. The SikaFlex is already breaking down a bit so he suggested an 'overcoat' of Dicor (the original sealant). I resealed several spots and screw tops around the skylight, as well as ladder attachment at roof and a few other odds-&-ends spots. I think I prefer the original Dicor to the SikaFlex 715. Both are a bit pricey, but Dicor cleans up easy with dish soap and a little scrubbing. SikaFlex not quite so easy or clean.

Hope this helps! Definitely keep an close eye on your roof (as you're doing). It's worth every minute you spend up there, verifying, correcting, cleaning... good peace of mind as well.

Regards...

That sure didn't last long, I'd use a plastic scraper and clean it up good, and then buy Eternabond tape and follow the directions to apply it...... They say if prepped and wiped down with acetone good it can be applied right on the old caulk if its not silicone. Amazon is the best place to get the tape. You will never have to look at it again, I did all the seams on my 2000 Mountain Aire with it years ago....... and when I upgraded, it still looked like the day I put it down.

Newmar specifies SureBond SB-140 for skylight caulking. When I did mine I used a plastic putty knife to remove the old stuff. Be sure to have 2 or 3 tubes on hand before starting the job. I just used alcohol for prep after removing the old sealant. I believe the skylights are polycarbonate so you want to avoid strong solvents like mineral spirits.

Hi Jeff the rv repair shops we sell to use seamtight first and the will apply the rvroofmagic. What you should be looking for is a product with good tensile strength and elongation. Thank you
