New to Newmar - water heater 1st post question

Hi Everyone - I'm new to the Newmar family...long time Class C owner...two week Class A owner. We have a 2017 31ft BayStar 3009.

We picked up our coach in Vero Beach, Florida, then drove back cross country to our home in Corvallis, Oregon. The previous owner was a nice guy, but didn't really understand anything about how the coach worked. We pushed along and through trial and error, figured out how most things worked. Having the same Class C motor home for 20 years gave me plenty of opportunities to become handy on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues. However, the Newmar class A is a different beast.

My first post question is - how do you turn on and off the hot water heater? In my Class C there was a switch in my main control/info panel. I can't find the equivalent switch in the Newmar (and I've looked all over). I always have hot water - I can hear the gas ignite so I know it's working, but now that we are home for a bit, I'd like to not be using the gas to heat water I'm not using.

Any help would be appreciated...and I know that I will be coming back to the well of information many more times in the future.

Thanks!

I have a 2020 Bay Star and I am a newbie. But over the door there is acontrol center with 2 switches that turn on electric and/ or gas water heater. I think that is what you are looking for.

May I suggest you call Newmar with the build number or VIN?

Yes, above the passenger area , inside the door. Turn off the gas ignite switch. It will also run when on electric so make sure it’s turned off.
My model is older , but I have a regular house style wall switch to turn the electric function on and off.

We often run ours on both electric and gas and the same time to get a speedier recovery time. No harm will come from it.

I have also at times run both. Only if needing rapid recovery eg 2 showers or laundry. I just find it redundant and a waste of 1 source if not needed.
My thought was possibly the electric is on as well as the propane.

On mine the switches are not clearly labeled. I don’t mean to sound patronizing, but I’m fairly confident they are in the front control cabinet.

Might help if you could post a picture of your control cabinet panel.

The control panel in our handicap Canyon Star has two switches with 'pictures'. One of a flame and the other of a spark/lightning volt.
I believe the Bay Star like the non-handicap Canyon Star has a control panel above the door

Thank you Doc

I believe that's it. The previous owner told me those switches were for the refrigerator, but on closer inspection of the fridge, there is a mode button that sets input type. I've turned both buttons off and we will see what happens. Thanks again!

In our 2019 they are in the overhead control center above the door and labeled. I’m not sure if Newmar labeled it or the dealer. Here is a picture of ours. Maybe it will help figure out which switch is which. The other option would be turn them both on, then turn off the gas so it will fault and throw the light on. You could then toggle off the switch and see if the light goes out. That would isolate the switch controlling the gas.

Also, welcome and hello from another Oregon Newmar owner.
