Newmar & Happy Campers Holding Tank Treatment

Getting our first coach & all this is new to me. Does Newmar have any restrictions on which holding tank treatment is used in a new coach?

One that was recommended to me by a fellow Newmar owner is Happy Camper Organic Holding Tank Treatment. From what I read, it looks like a good tank treatment.

Anyone using Happy Camper in black tank?

And also, do you treat your grey tank with anything?

It's just a plastic tank. You can't hurt it. I use whatever I find. Generally no need to treat gray tank.

I use the drop in chemicals that come in a bag of about 10 at CW for about $8 on sale, for the black tanks. They work great and we have had no odors or problems with the tanks. For the grey water, every so often I use the lemon scented tablets that you dissolve in the sink( CW about $8 for a bag of 7). You just drop in one tablet and leave it until the tank needs to be dumped again. No odors from our sinks of showers, and they are not needed every time you dump.

I ask if Newmar has any restrictions on what yo use because someone at Newmar told me not use a particular tank treatment.

NO, I don't remember what it was or the reason not to use it.

This is my second coach and I've never been told anything. You may find you get different answers from different phone techs on the same questions.

I have used a few different products and settled on HC (for over five years) for a couple of reasons:

If you buy it in the larger containers, it is by far, more cost effective.

It outperforms any of the other products I've tried in terms of solids breakdown, smell (especially in hot weather) and keeping tank sensors working properly.

Some folks say they don't use any chemicals and it works for them. I think this may apply particularly to full timers who are using the systems continually but for occasional users like me, the chemicals do help maintain my tanks.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Ok.... using any chemicals in your black/gray tanks is totally and 100% not required. I'm not sure why people feel the need to spend money for something that won't do any better job than soap and water.

Being a new coach, just try using lots of water when using the toilet and making sure there's lots of water in the black tank before you use it. When ready to dump, add water to insure the tank is at least 2/3rd full.

When traveling, empty tank and put about 5 gallons of water back into it. Add a cup of liquid detergent and a 1/2 cup of liquid Calgon water softener. Sloshing while on the road will clean out any residue left over from the last dump.

Honestly, there is NO need to add chemicals! If you get an odor, it indicates that you have a problem somewhere. Usually it's the AAV under the sinks and need to be replaced, or the seal on the toilet flange is bad. With a properly working system, the roof vent for the tanks will vent all odors outside.

Word of advice. When flushing the toilet, make sure the overhead vent/fan is closed. If open, it will suck the air up through the toilet and right into the bathroom.

Good luck and enjoy you need coach.

Ron

Ron, with all due respect, are dish soap and Calgon not chemicals?

I agree with that. Guests usually struggle with fan sequencing.. I did the calgon/detergent mixture for several months. It worked well, but I had some sensor problems. I used the HC and sensors remained clean and read accurately. Great advice on the AAV's. Several good threads with reliable parts number replacement.

no hard things in macerator toilets

I'm assuming it would be a big problem to drop the little pre-measured pods in the macerator toilets. So, I either use liquid or loose powder.

Seriously put them in with water and flush later. They break down.
