Newmar Canyon Star 3953
1st motorhome, previously had 5th wheel. Has anyone done an aftermarket upgrade for keyless system on entry door latch on a Canyon Star? Not referring to door handle keyless on diesel models, but on entry door itself. Also, no slide topper on kitchen slide due to close proximity of side awning according to Newmar Rep, any thoughts on this or have any of you 3953 owners added the slide topper? Thanks!

My DS doesn't have a topper over the front passenger side slide. Nor do I remember seeing on any of them.

My KS doesn't have a slide topper over that slide either.

Hi Jlinnx01,
Welcome to iRV2 and the Newmar Owners Forum. Consider opening the main awning enough to cover the slide. When leaving camp, be sure to retract the slide first, then retract the awning. All debris will fall to the ground. In addition the sun will not beat down on the top of the slide and interior cabinets.
All coaches ending in "Star" have this setup. The DSDP may have change very recently when Newmar added the roof façade. The façade raised the main awning allowing a topper.

Jlinnx01,
While our "Star" happens to have factory toppers on all of our slides, our model does not have a kitchen slide or whatever slide might otherwise interfere with the awning. In time we have learned small "tricks" to overcome certain quirks that anyone finds with their coach. Certainly if there is a potential to partially extend the awning to cover a slide that does not have a topper, that sounds like one possible way to overcome the issue. However, if you do try it that way, a word of caution would be in order. The first time you try it you might consider having a helper watch what is happening from a perspective that is different than yours. The last thing you want to do is damage the awning, slide or coach. Once you have determined whether or not this addresses the issue you can develop a step by step process for setting it up when you want to. I will say it does make sense to want to keep the sun (heat) and rain off the top of your open slide. I hope the prior poster's suggestion works for you. Safe travels.

We do not have a topper on the kitchen slide. We have always used the awning extended out just enough to cover the slide. Works like a charm during the rain without any problem. Been doing this since we took delivery in 2014. Having a topper would be nice but, we don't see it as a show stopper when you have the awning.

Same setup here - no topper. But it is easy enough to just run the awning out just enough to cover the slide if you don't want to deploy the awning fully. And in bad stormy weather, we don't even run the kitchen slide out. So there is no need to run the awning out either. Still have plenty of room in the coach since it has opposible slides in the living area.

Our '02 DSDP 4090 was the same way, never added it either as, over the 13 years we had it, just never felt the need.

Jlinnx01,
Picked up our 2015 CS3953 in July, put on 7500 miles worth of vacation and loving the MH. Wife retired, I still regretfully have 3 years left. We have had nothing but pleasure with our Newmar. As far as the kitchen topper is concerned, we found that leaving the main awning out doesn't seem to be a big deal. Others with more experience might have more experience, which might put fear into me, but we have even left the awning out at the beach. Seems to jump a lot in the wind (same as video on awning web site), but when the wind really picks up awning retracts. Doesn't seem to be as big a deal as I thought when looking.
