Newmar Diesel Owners, how do you put oil in your engine
This weekend I changed my DS oil for the first time, other then the fact that it holds 26 quarts of oil and the oil filter is the size of a small torpedo[emoji4] it all went as expected, except when it came time to add the new 26 quarts. The oil access tube is completely horizontal and high enough up that it’s not easy to get a funnel in a usable position due to the engine hatch. I was able to rig a hose on a funnel and with my wife’s assistance to steady the funnel I was able to slowly poor the oil in.
I’m sure you Diesel veterans have some slick(no pun intended) methods and tools to get this job done. Educate me please!
Thanks Stuart

I plan on buying a pump, which is what my mobile oil service uses. Here is an inexpensive version:

How do you drain the 26 quarts? A big container?

My biggest hassle is pouring the used oil back into containers for recycling. I am a do it yourself guy but have had good luck with speedco and avoided the mess and hassle of a oil change. After buying the oil and filter then dealing with disposing of used oil the cost adds up.

Looks like it’s only for fuel transfer, have you used one before?

I used one drain pan for the filter, it holds several quarts.
Then I used a 23 quart drain pan. I drained gallon or so then put the plug back in, drained that gallon and then continued draining the rest into the 23 quart pan/container. The container has a pour spout so it wasn’t to bad pouring the used oil back into the old containers.

Yes on my tractors. This is a very cheap version, but does say it is good for diesel oil.
I have a $500 version I use on my tractors, would be good for this for sure. May be too much $$ for most unless you can get more use out of it.
I plan on ordering the cheaper one to test, as it is attractive price point.

Anyone use the dip stick tube, hose and 12V pump to suck the oil out, instead of draining from oil pan? Same pump to put back in fresh oil through the fill valve cap
Any reason not to? Time not an issue

If you buy your DEF in the 2.5 gallon jugs, save three of them for oil changes. With the Fumoto valve you can drain your oil directly into them and then just drop off at your local auto parts store. I buy the 2.5 gallon jugs of Rotella from Walmart when I do my oil changes. I use them the same way, draining the oil directly from the Fumoto valve into the jugs. Saving just one DEF jug is enough to drain the additional 1.5 gallons that's left.
As I get older, it's tougher to hold those 2.5 gallon jugs up and pour back into the engine, but I use a transmission funnel, put a bend in it and hold it in place with a bungee. That has worked for 15 years. It may be time for an electric pump which would work for the coach and my boat.

Makes me appreciate even more my friend who owns a top-notch diesel service shop. In by 9:00 am, out by 3:00 pm. No funnels, pumps, drain pans or oil disposal issues. Thanks, John!
