Question Newmar units to avoid

Hello all,

In the bigger diesel pushers (40 and up) are there particular models/engines/options to avoid or verify that they have been fixed?

Thanks

Wowsers! Pretty broad question. What era, years, model levels are you in the market for?

I prefer Cummins over Cat, pre 2008 is agreed to be less problematic in the smog department

Post 2008 is when you get Comfort Steer,

Modern DEF engine seem to be working out well if you maintain them and use good (fresh) DEF

There seem to be a lot of issues with 2019-2020 rigs (Lippert windows, complex electronic stuff malfing, etc) but that may just be because I’m paying closer attention

Seems like coaches are a lot heavier now than in the 2010-2016 years with the same engine/power

I’m not a fan of all the modern multi-plex stuff but it has its advantages...

Need some specifics here

I am looking from 2005 to 2011. Tag axle preferred. What is comfort steer? Also is there a preferred chassis, Spartan or Freightliner?

Pay attention to the engine serial number.Cummins had a major problem 2005 to 2007. The list of serial numbers recalled was on their web site. I have an 07...the serial is about 200 after the recall...No DEF required been rock solid, except for ball joints on Spartan chassis

Will follow your post as I too am looking for a tag. Looking for pre DPF/DEF with Cummins power.

Currently have 04 MADP 4017. Been shopping 06/07 Essex but EPLEX scares me. Finding sellers definition of ‘Clean, well Maintained’ is very subjective!

Ok well that narrows it down a bunch. Comfort Drive (steer) began in 2008 and has been adjustable since 2009. I woulnt buy a Newmar without it. It has been unique to Newmar until the las couple years when Entegra (I think....) came out with a similar product. But it’s entirely worth making it a priority.

This is not meant to sharpshoot your answer but our previous 2007 Essex had Comfort Drive. The only reason I am responding is that I would not want the OP to forgo looking at that year for a used non DEF coach.

That’s interesting. I think London Aire units had it then too, maybe even in 06, but the first year in all the DPs was 08, and then in ‘09 the adjustable version came out.

From the ‘07 Essex brochure:

KenSherwin (the inventor/developer) wrote a great report on Comfort Drive. It's a sticky in the Newmar forum. Worth a read if you aren't familiar with it.
I agree w those that recommend it.

Is there anything like Comfort Drive, or perhaps even Comfort Drive itself, that can be retrofit to an earlier coach that is not equipped?

I suppose if you have enough money anything is possible. However, from a practical standpoint Comfort Drive cannot be retrofit.

I've got an 05 Essex, which we love. Quality seems really good and it's awfully nice for a 15 year old coach. Comfort drive would be nice but since I've never had it, I don't miss it all that much. I too, thought they introduced it in 07. If it were available as a retrofit, I'd strongly consider springingh for it!

Comfort drive is a Big plus. Eplex is a big negative. Eplex is older EMS that is no longer supported. You will hear plenty of people that say it is good and they have no problems. We Had it and it sucks. Do your research. Good luck.

Enjoy the journey

Please pardon my extreme ignorance, I know what comfort drive is but what is an Eplex?
