I had a 40 foot DSDP and had two of these units. The upgrade on the Canyon Star was to go to 13.5 heat pump units. I found the front of the coach to warm to hot a lot, so I thought I would upgrade to 15.0. But, the cost difference seems awful high to me. I was expecting about $150 per unit. I don''t know how the 13.5 units are working for people - any comments on this size unit in 39 foot Canyon Star coaches.

That's a mighty high price to pay. Coleman pricing is a little over $50 per unit difference.

Not sure what brand but damn, you would be paying $1000 for the hassle factor to them (before discounts).

May be a different configuration. What does the upgrade include? New temp sensors, thermostat, additional wiring? It can't just be the cost of the units themselves.

Unless Newmar has had a significant price increase in the past few years, the up charge on a new build should be less than $500 to upgrade from the standard13.5 to the 15s. This is for a brand new build, not as a replacement.

We paid $469 minus our discount to upgrade two units.

If I do it again, I'm ordering them max btu available for the at least the front roof unit. I have 13.5's in our 40' CS and its not enough about half the time I use the A/C.

We had the 13.5 heat pumps in our '02 DSDP and never had any heat related problems. I wonder if the higher cost is due to also upgrading the service to a 50 amp? With the DSDP I could run both heat pumps on a single 30 amp service, which is why I ordered that configuration.

I was thinking along those lines as well. Also, would the upgrade mean a bump in generator size?

We did this upgrade as one of our custom changes in build process and this figure seems about right. We had a total upgrade cost of about $3,000 which included other changes. The standard AC's in the Canyon Star are not heat pump units. The upgrade cost to 13.5 heat pump AC's is $378. If you look at a price sheet for a Ventana the upcharge for changing from 13.5 heat pump units to 15 heat pump units is $843 which comes to a total of $1221.

I have already upgraded to 13.5 heat pumps, $378 as stated. I upgraded to the 50 amp service already with larger generator unit. I would assume the wiring would handle the different size units with out other changes. This is why I thought it was a lot. But if they are charging another $878 on the Ventana - I wonder if the person making the quote to us didn't realize I had already done the other two upgrades. I have asked the sales person to check into this deeper. We full times in the DSDP, we will not be full timing in the Canyon Star unless something changes. I put a large fan in the bathroom, which was in the middle of the coach when we full timed in warm climates to move colder air from the rear of the coach and they worked well. But we had two 15.0 heat pump air units in it. That is why I was concerned about the smaller units in the Canyon Star.

I don't think I will upgrade for that cost and take my chances.

On a the ventana Le option sheet it lists $843 for the upgrade.

The Invoice shows the upcharge for the 2-15k heat pumps on our Canyon Star 3712 was $843 less the applicable purchase discount. It was well worth the money. The Auto function with the Dometic units where the HVAC system changes from A/C-HP-Furnace is phenomenal!

I'd be really interested to know what the real difference is between the 13.5 and the 15k units are. The heat pump aspect of it really doesn't add much of anything other than a reversing circuit that has a solenoid and a valve and some additional tubing. You really wouldn't need any additional power to upgrade to heat pumps. Amazing they are that expensive. The supplier must be making a killing on those things.

For the 15K upgrade it may be different, but I suspect not. I'd almost bet its the same unit with a different fan for the increased capacity. I had a friend with a Jayco C class that had an upgrade to the 15k (non-HP). I believe they were some type of coleman unit, but not positive. He got to messing around with it and found something that led him to believe it only got the 13.5 unit. So, he gets on the phone with the manufacturer and tells them he got the wrong unit, is there any easy way he can upgrade it? Long story short, the customer service rep tells him the only difference is the fan. Rest of the unit is exactly the same. I think he told him how to verify the proper fan. I know I have seen some funny deals like that before on other things that just don't make sense, so I don't doubt it a bit. The guy told him they get out with the wrong lable on them all the time. The Penguin IIs on the Newmar may be different but somehow I doubt it.
