Noisy AC Units

I have a 2016 3710 Canyon Star with two very noisey 13,500 BTU Dometic Penguin II AC units.

Before I purchased this RV I remember the salesman telling me (and I agreed) how quiet the AC units were on a Bay Star I was looking at before I purchased the Canyon Star.

I've had the RV back three times to Tampa RV where I purchased the RV without success. Does anyone else have a similar problem with their Dometic units and better yet the solution to making these units quieter?

Newmars donít have the quick dump grill.

Iíve used heat pumps more than A/C with it being late fall and noticed they seem louder than when I ran the air conditioning right after pick by up the coach. Not sure what to compare it to though.

On my 2012 Ventana Newmar installed some bushings to insulate the unit from the roof which definitely helped quite it down.

All the noise my new a/c was making was caused by the copper tubing vibrating. Can be seen through vent holes while unit is running. I removed cover and installed large ty-raps between the tubing putting a slight tension on the tubing and stopping the vibrating. This needs to be done with unit running so that you can see where the ty-raps need to be. I suspect many failures are caused by the tubing cracking after some time. My unit now as quiet as the two older units.

We have a 2017 Bay Star with same AC units. Very noisy; more so with heat pump. Front unit failed on our maiden trip and replacement no quieter. Recent trip back to Napanee I asked service tech to check units. He measured decibel levels and found them to be on high end of specs. He tried adjusting mounting brackets but no real improvement. We now just "live with it" by running the unit at the opposite end of coach from which we are occupying.

The noise of the Penguin II A/C system is not going to quiet down and will most likely get even louder over time. And to add insult to injury they are also not vary reliable.

I'm on my 5th set of A/C units and the best decision I made was to buy the 5 year extended warranty and so far, Dometic had to absorb the cost of the units plus labor.

What really got to me about the Penguin was not just the noise while running, but they seemed to turn on with a bang and would wake me from a sound sleep.

Finally gave up on the Penguin series and had Dometic replace them with the newer Blizzard NXT 15K Heat Pumps. A little quieter at start up and while running. Plus they put a lot more air. My thoughts.

Noisey AC Units

Thank you everyone for your input so far.

I am waiting almost a year for the bushing upgrade but don't have much hope this will help. I plan to clean the units within the next month and will also see if I can get dometic to send me the bushing upgrade so I can finally have the dealer install them.

The heat pump does run louder than the AC units and like one of you mentioned for noise control, we also run the front unit when sleeping and the rear unit during the day until we need to kick in the second unit as the temperature changes.

I have a five year extended warranty and when these AC units die I will not be replacing these units with Dometic units even if I have to pony up some money for the change to a different brand.

I believe that!
I was parked back to back with a newer Phaeton, we both had one HP running.
Standing outside, roughly alongside my running Duo-therm, I couldn't hear mine running over the sound of the Coleman about 60' away.

If you need a softer start, these will help you out....

On our Baystar, the 13.5 units seemed quiet when looking at buying, then after owning. they seemed to be very loud. Had the rear fail and was replaced under warranty. The 15k models on our DS are quieter and have been plugged in and running here in Fl since new. 2 years later (knock on wood) they still are quiet and work great. I had heard the 13.5 were louder and not as reliable, and it seems to have played out for us.

Jim,

Interesting comparison between the two different sized units. I have one of each, 15K up front and 13.5K in the rear on our Bay Star. I'll have to take notice if one is louder than the other.
