OASIS shorting out on AC II

I’ve been on burner but also have AC II on and noticed I haven’t been seeing the green light. Sure enough breaker was tripped. I reset it and smell electrical burning and it trips again. One more time I repeated this to find where and staring at the OASIS a big spark flies out the white cable harness and trips the breaker. This after I reset OASIS and saw AC Heat was on. So the breaker remains off now.

Neil,
Check the wiring coming into the Oasis. Mine did this when new. Newmar had nicked a wire and the clamp at the top of the Oasis caused it to short out. When it shorted out, it also took out the PCS board.

Thanks. Odd it’s been fine for a year and a half and 500 hours on the meter.

Not sure if it helps to call Newmar or just call ITR tomorrow. Sometimes going through Newmar helps. Not sure.

My AC side stopped working also. Here is what I found. Click image for larger version

Part of the removable shroud had to be taken out. Bunch of wires had melted in a plastic mess.

What was the fix and who paid?

Have you checked for signs of vermin (mice, squirrels, etc.)? They love to chew on wires and can cause shorts where the insulation has been removed.

Good luck.

No signs of stowaways. I think this is a case of poor wiring which chafed by vibration over time.

As mentioned, the first thing I would check is the AC connection going into the Oasis at the clamp. Mine was also bad. Have you been losing any fluid? If so you may have the second more serious problem.

The Oasis warranty is only 1 year.

Looks like it was a poor crimp / spade connection that heated up and melted the black wire wrap holding the wire junction together.
I paid for it.
But last year I also removed the metal housing for all the AC wiring that was located inside the green shroud, and installed a housing for a quad receptacle on top of the Oasis. It is so much easier to work, and the wires are not cramped.
Here is what the connection looks after I peeled off all the plastic I can.Click image for larger version

What's the best way to access this to check it out? Do I have to crawl in from the back side? Looking for tips so I can check it out tomorrow.

Both breakers are off, do I also need to kill shore power or both breakers off sufficient?

Neil,
I had a similar problem caused by a short that caused a small fire that was contained within the insulation within the Oasis unit thankfully. At the end of the day I had a short that caused one of heating elements to fail, a few shorted and burnt wires and it fried the electronics board inside the small green box on the sidewall. ITR was great helping me through the process of diagnosis and repair. I used a mobile RV tech for the electrical repairs, element replacement and draining and refill of the boiler fluid. I replaced the electronics my self. Neither Newmar or ITR had any interest in helping me with the repairs since the coach was nearly three years old at the time. I had an extended warranty and they covered all of the repairs subject to my deductible so not too bad for me cost wise. Total all in was roughly $1,400 with tax and shipping costs. Because we were without hot water we paid for expedited shipping which added about $100 to the bill. I hope this helps. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Oops....forgot to answer your question. Neither the mobile tech nor I disconnected from shore power, just the breakers were turned off.
