Oil consumption between oil changes.

How many, if any, quarts of oil will you add between oil changes? Assuming 10,000 to 12,000 miles driven between changes.

On our LA with the X-15 605 have found that if we keep the oil level at the full mark it uses a gallon in 2K miles. But if we keep the oil level at the add line which is 12 gallons it doesn't use any oil in at least 6K miles. Would suggest try keeping oil level at add line and see if oil usage gets better.

My 2013 MA with the ISL9 450 does not have any noticeable oil consumption in 5000 miles. I've had it three years and run 4k to 6k miles annually, so I cannot comment on 10k miles, but would assume minimal.

After 11,000 miles on my L9, no noticeable oil consumption.

I've had one ISL 400 and two ISL/L9 450's and have never burned oil in between 10K-12K oil changes. On the ISL many argue it will take 27 -28 quarts. On all three of mine I only add 26 quarts with filter change. It comes up to the middle of the dipstick.

I used only 26 quarts at oil change too. I know on my last rig with the C7 cat, if you over filled it(above the bottom level mark on the dip stick) it would blow a lot of oil out the puke tube until it went down to the bottom mark on the dip stick and then would hold steady after that. There was a whole bunch of those motors that had the wrong dip sticks installed and if you filled to the top mark, you were adding 3 quarts beyond what the specs said.

26 quarts with filter on mine too. Puts it nearly to the full line.

I have an ISL 9 and use none between changes.
If I was using a gallon between changes it has to be going somewhere. JMHO

It sounds like many of you are going by miles not time in changing your oil. My manual states 1 year or 15,000 miles oil change interval. I change it every year and never am I remotely close to 15,000. Is yearly oil changes overkill?

Same boat. I don’t do 10k miles a year. I think yearly changes are over kill for the 2-3k miles I do per year. I might go to every other year for fluid changes.

Yes. And all my experienced diesel mechanic friends agree.
If you need that confirmation, go 10,000 miles and pull an oil sample and get it analyzed when you change the oil.

Owners need to understand why Cummins say annual or 15000 miles between oil changes. Diesel engines’ combustion process creates large amounts of acids and other contaminated from the combustion process which all end up in the oil. These can cause permanent damage to bearings and seals in the engine and turbocharger.
