Opportunities never cease

I just had to hang my head today and say "Why".

Last week I took the coach in for a front end and axle alignment. The job went smoothly and well. While at the tire dealer I asked about auto balancers (have been recommended to me by several friends). Had them installed, as I backed out of the bay I hear this horrible crunch. Stopped the coach to look at what might have hit but fortunately I hadn't, looked at my steer time and see oil all over it. Seems they installed the wrong set on the front and they broke as soon as I moved. Off course they replaced them right away and off I went. Coach now tracks nice and straight.

Today I installed new batteries, old ones were not holding charge very long. Took pictures, drew diagrams, etc. To ensure I would wire them correctly. Installed the new batteries making sure to follow my drawings. Made sure the coach ground was the last to be wired. As I was connecting the last battery pair (they are in a different compartment) I get a major spark as I brushed the terminal with the cable. Check drawings, check photos, yup this is where the cable should go. Traced the cable back and sure enough it is on the wrong terminal.
Looks like who ever wired the batteries last time managed to connect the last pair as a dead short.
Changed to the correct terminal and all is good. Tested the old batteries and sure enough that pair was only providing 3.6 volts. No wonder I was having an issue.

It had been charging for 3 hours now and all looks good. Glad I found the problem and didn't fry any circuits (or art least none t hat I have seen yet!

Save travels all Steve.

Sounds like a couple of lucky outcomes that could have been not so lucky. Glad all worked out for you.

Hello spinn... Were the old batteries factory installed? Or do you know who installed the old batteries? Somebody should be liable for your replacement costs if possible. The main thing is that you found the problem and prevented a major disaster. Good job.

We purchased the coach used about a year ago. It was a consignment sale through a dealer. Batteries were not original, I have no idea who did the replacement.

Just goes to show that you can prove you are lucky, you can't always prove you are good! LOL

Timing is everything. I know what you mean about "opportunities". We pulled into our current location and a week into our 4 month stay the water heater started leaking and the front AC started to drop out of AC into heat pump. At least we are in a place to get this all done while we are stationary. Both of these could have been a PIA on the road. Last year at the Spartan factory they found a couple big issues we would have been clueless about.

So...I feel real brilliant getting an extended service contract. It will have cost me about $6K when I am done paying on it and I have already collected $4K from them in the first year of a 4 year contract.

Next project...mirror reflection correction enhancement.

The old adage of "i'd rather be lucky than
Smart" is one that I would buy into anytime!
Ouch hope the leak and ac issue get fixed. May I ask who you got your extended warranty with?

Thanks Steve

I have to shake my head when I think that most places that work on coaches, trucks, cars, etc. get $80 to $100 or more an hour, and still do shoddy work. The old addage of... if you want something done right, ask IRV2, check it out on Youtube, and DO IT yourself applies more than ever... thanks for sharing!

Glad it worked out Steve

You might want to consider buying a lottery ticket just to round it out
