With regards to I-40, there are no tolls. And if you take Texas Highway 287 from Amarillo to Dallas, I don't believe you'll encounter any toll there, either. We just took I-40 in the region you're talking about last September, and Flying J's are pretty well-positioned from Winslow to Amarillo, giving you plenty of RV-friendly opportunities. As for places to stop, have you been to the Grand Canyon? Very nice campground there if you plan ahead. If you like vintage motorhomes on display, there's a cute place in Albuquerque called Enchanted Trails RV Park. And I've heard good reports of Meteor Crater RV Park, close to it's namesake in Arizona. I'm sure lots of other choices as well.

I am not aware of any tolls on I40. I40 has a lot of cross country truck traffic, so quite a few truck stops on it for fuel. There are also some pretty good stretches of nothing.

West side of Albuquerque there are some camp grounds right off I40. Not much in town. Never stayed at them. The KOA on the east side of ABQ is stupid expensive.

I assume when you get to Amarillo you will be taking 287 to Dallas. My parents have stayed a City Park in Wichita Falls they thought was fine a couple years ago. There is a Welcome Center in Amarillo that you can overnight in. The Big Texan has a campground associated with it. The Flying J in Amarillo has RV lanes, but they are terrible, and I won't stop there anymore. Almost no clearance. Also a couple large rest stops on 287 that you can also spend the night at if you don't have to have a camp ground.

No tolls on I-40 or US-287. There are tolls if you continue further east of Oklahoma City.

US287 is a four lane divided surface highway. Not a limited access freeway, but a good surface highway.

There are tolls roads in the DFW metro area. In some cases there is a freeway and a parallel tolled express lane (usually labeled “Texpress.” Cute.) So make sure that within the metro area you know the route you wish to take. You can avoid the toll roads, acquire a toll transponder, or just drive and they will send you a bill in the mail based on license plate.

I hear traffic is terrible these days because the metro area has increased in population so much. Brace yourself.
