Overheating

1999 Dutchstar DSPS 300HP Cat/

Temp gauge just below red heat reading 189 and below.

Last year before service turning on headlights caused temp gauge to increase by 1/4 scale. always above middle scale.

Tightened some grounds and that problem was solved. But recently it always reads hot. No leaks, coolant is fine and fans are all working correctly.

With the 169 and 189 readings it seems I may have an electrical problem, or a sensor problem or a gauge problem.

This coach has always had an under voltage problem. Could that be the problem.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to iRV2 .
99 DS with a Cat I'm assuming Freightliner Chassis . Like mine .
The 1/4 scale jump with headlight is a problem I'm having with my fuel gauge.
But back to your problem. (s)
Under voltage ? Gauge reads low or batteries not charging ?
Here is info on the Freightliner gauge system and testing .

If you could take a min. and from the " User CP' on the left hand side of the blue bar, under your welcome , go to "Edit Signature " in a grey box on the side of the page and put in your coaches info, and save changes when your finished. The info will appear as mine does below & you won't have to type it in every time you post a question.

Thank you for your reply.

I took the unit in to Freightliner last night and they are working on the problem as this is being sent.

The temp gauge was just under red when I arrived at the service facility and the thermo gun showed 200 degrees in several locations. Hope they can find an inexpensive fix.

The under voltage issue shows on the meter on the dash. It is a low to high meter and the indicator stays at the 1/3 line and bounces when I turn on my turn signals and drops a little when I turn on my headlights.

The batteries however are fully charged so this has not been an issue.

I was told by the local Freightliner service center that it was not a safety issue and should not impact the operation of the vehicle.

Any thoughts?

New operator with 2002 National Tradewinds LTC on Duromax Chassis by Country Coach had Cummins ISC 350 with side mount radiator. Recently experienced temporary (less than 30 seconds) hot engine light on long mountain climbs and have been nervous about normal operating temperatures ever since. Normally engine is running 205 to 220 degrees and the hot engine lite comes on as soon as it exceeds 220. With fan control disconnected so fan runs continuously temps run 195-205 and I feel much less nervous.
What is normal operating temp range?

Hi Dan OBrien,
My Cummins ISC 330 runs at 182 +/- 3 degrees. Mr. Allison runs at 180 +/- 5 degrees. Very solid except for long pulls (Smoky and Rocky Mountains). Mr. Cummins go's to 210 maximum and Mr. Allison rises to 194. They return to normal after cresting the mountain. I'm moving 37.5K lbs. down the road. Flat land is at 60 mph on cruise control. Mountains are pulled at what ever the traffic (truck) will allow. This is how the coach has run since new.

I had an overheating problem which could be directly related to engine load. Turned out the radiator was dirty due to an oil breather tube which exhausted in front of the radiator intake. Cat engine.
