Portable Air Pump

I've been looking on the internet for a portable air pump that is heavy duty enough to pump up our 22" coach tires to at least 110psi. I have looked at a Viair 400P-RV that sounds like it would work, but it sure isn't cheap ($220-$250). It use battery terminal (12V) connectors to run it and it is supposed to have a 40 min duty cycle. Others that I have looked at are a lot cheaper, and say that they will work up to 150psi, but only have a 10 min cycle with 20 mins rest between. The online info on the Viair says it pulls 23 amps and the vehicle should be running when using. With out battery banks I wonder if this is necessary.

Anyone have any thoughts? I think I'd almost prefer a 110V unit, but maybe the battery connecting one will work.

Porter Cable units are also popular 120V units. I bought a vertical one for about $99.
Pancakes also popular. Takes a little more space but does the job for a lot less $

Agree. I have the Porter Cable compact verticle. Also have ViAir 450 RV I use in the jeep to air up after offroading. The Porter Cable bests the ViAir in air up time.

Porter Cable CMB-15! Lots of coach folks use them. A search of IRV2 will turn up quite a few satisfied users, including me. Capable of 150 psi, 120 VAC operation, good volume and can be purchased for $100, or less.

I use my viair 450 http://amzn.to/2F79d7b on the house battery terminals without the engine running, but most of the time I am on shore power when I am filling them. The 450 has a 100% duty cycle and is rated for my larger tires. The company doesn't go by the rim sizes, they go by tire height. I had to call them before I pulled the trigger as the numbers published were from the high 30's to mid 40". I went out and measured my 22.5 rimmed tires and they were in the neighborhood of 43" tall. I have been using it for over a year now and like how quiet and lightweight it is. And the really lightweight coiled air hose that can reach all my tires including the toads without moving the unit around.

+1 on the VAIR 450 http://amzn.to/2F79d7b. I got it since it has an auto shutoff I use when filling the duallys. The auto shutoff feature lets you use a push-fit type filler chuck like on your compressor at home. All the others I have seen require to screw on the hose that is difficult to reach in a dually tire setup. I have tried extensions and after the first flat due to the extension not being tight/leaked I removed them.

I have a box of lesser quality pumps that either failed or are a huge pain in the butt (screw on hose) to use on duallys.

Have burned out three of the cheaper 120 volt units. Now have a Viair 450 RV unit. Works great and is much quieter and smaller. Only time will tell about it's longevity.

Can anyone explain why a portable unit is better than the female fitting under the generator bay connecting to the air tanks onboard?
