Power Steering Pump and Tire Rivering

The TRW Power Steering Pump is leaking power steering fluid. It does not seem to be a large leak - and the reservoir tank level is not going down noticeably. The pump is not leaking engine oil - the leak is red fluid. While I don't know for certain yet - my concern is the fitting on the hose is leaking, which I'm told will require replacing the entire hose to the front of the coach. Has anyone experienced this issue?

Separately - the front tires are showing Rivering wear on the sides of the tires -more on Driver's side of the coach. I've had an alignment - and rotated tires with the tag - but the Rivering issue is still apparent. Has anyone else experienced this issue with the Michelin tires - and how was the issue resolved?

Thanks!

Michelin Tire Rivering, I have that on the passenger steer tire. Had the coach aligned last year, as part of the alignment I asked about the wear on the tire. The Technician said that the alignment was “only slightly out” and would not account for that kind of wear on the tire. They then turned to their “tire expert” that looked at the tire and declared “Rivering”, an apparent known condition with Michelin tires. He showed me a Michelin poster that identified “different tire wear conditions”. There it was, on the Michelin chart... Michelin states: rotate annually and use as is!

PS hose

Had to replace a Power Steering hose under warranty. Talking to the parts guy at Freightliner, it is expensive. He stated that if I had to buy one, I should take the 38 foot hose to a place that makes industrial hoses; would cost a lot less.
If you change the hose yourself, tie a rope to the hose before you remove it. Use the rope to pull the new one through the frame rails. The tricky part is cutting the sealant at the ends of the frame rails. Also re-sealing them is difficult. If the rail is not sealed, water will enter if you drive in the rain.
I know this because mine still leaks. The FL tech used a whole can of foam spray insulation to seal the aft end. It still leaks. Took the coach to Gaffney and was told that the body builder (Newmar) is responsible for sealing the rails. I asked for clarification: "So Freightliner created the problem but Newmar has to fix it?" Gaffney repeated, "Freightliner does not seal the frame rails."
My next step is to remove the pegboard wall in the last bay and try to get to the end of the frame rail; either that or remove the drive duels to gain access.
In either case, it will not be fun.
Good luck

Tire information can be found in this link and can ask the Tireman9 about tires.
You have good hose info.

Hi Jon Barnes,
Faced this situation years ago. After several alignment shops and new tires, I went to the factory. Spartan aligned the steer axle. New front tires. No more rivering. Consider the manufacturer of your chassis do the alignment.

on my 2016 tiffin phaeton, the hose let go up front, right at the fitting...the hose was cut too short, and the bend up front was too sharp of a radius, and it let go after about 8k miles. it was replaced under warranty for me, and it was a labor intensive repair...

i know that this issue ended up being a recall / TSB issue on these vintage FL chassis (IIRC 2015-2016)....there were two issues...hose too short, and/or hose routed too close to alternator and chaffing / abraiding on the alternator bracket, that caused a leak, and then an engine compartment fire.....i think "webz" post alludes to this....

based on the date of production for your chassis, have you made sure this is not a recall related issue ? perhaps you can press FL on a warranty / goodwill claim...

just a thought....

Yeah - I've had the same thought about this issue related to the Freightliner recall(s). It's possible the leak is simply a lose fitting too. I have an appointment with Freightliner - and then go from from there - thanks.

I've had the coach aligned twice over the past year and 10k miles. The Michelin site seems to say this is not a big deal - but I don't like issues related to the steer tires. Years ago I remember Good Year tires seemed to have this problem routinely when installed on the steer tires of Monaco coaches - including my Windsor. I considered stopping at Gaffney - but they are booked until late November. Newmar suggested the tag is out of alignment causing the tire wear on the steer tires.

I don't think TRW makes power steering pumps. Are you sure about that?

Hey Ken - that's what is stamped on the end of the pump - TRW B. Perhaps I'm looking at the wrong part. Thanks for your input - I appreciate it.

If it's at the front of the coach with a shaft connected to the axle and another one connected to the steering wheel, it's the steering gear and should not me leaking. It needs resealed or replaced.

If it's mounted on the engine, I still don't know what you/re looking at.
