Power Steering Reservoir Cap Blew Off

Has this happened to anyone else? Happened near the end of a 300 mile run. Blew oil all over the rear of the engine compartment and front of the tow vehicle.

Does anyone have a suggestion on where to get a replacement?

As a temporary fix, I would find a cone shaped rubber foot, (Home Depot or Lowes) and screw it into the top. A pvc sprinkler pipe fitting may also work as a temp fix.

Hello Don

Headed there later today. If I remember correctly, I think it was a compression type seal that expanded when the cap was tightened. Maybe it just loosened over time and the pressure from the heat and fluid movement blew it off.

Thanks for the suggestions.

You are right, when you tighten the cap it pulls upward on the rubber plunger expanding it. The bad news is there is a nut and washer in the bottom of the reservoir. I made the mistake of turning the cap too far trying to remove it and learned this lesson the hard way. The guys at Spartan are very familiar with this happening. They had me remove the tank clamp and fish out the nut and washer. My guess is they can help you get a new cap assembly.

You reminded me that I had learned this the hard way about two years ago also. However, I “believe” I fixed the threads on the shaft so the nut wouldn’t back off. My guess is the cap loosened enough to blow off. But just in case, I am going to deep dive into the reservoir to make sure the nut and washer isn’t in there!

Thanks for helping me with my memory

Hi - I don't believe that the nut is going to be a bother to anything as it cannot get passed the filter that's in the tank. If you tie a magnet to a string you can likely fish it out of there rather than removing the band that holds the two parts together. I believe that nut is ferrous.
