Problem hot water heater
My daughter and her family are living in our coach for a month while their house is being built. She called this morning and said the gas side of the water heater will not work properly. When the switch for the hot water heater is turned on the red light comes on, goes off and then shortly comes back on indicating it is not lit. Plenty of propane and the gas stove and furnace are working fine. Any help/suggestions from folks on this great forum is appreciated.

One problem might be, Why are they heating hot water?
You didn't give the make or model of the water heater, but Atwood and Suburban manuals and troubleshooting tips are available with a simple Google search. The issue could be a clogged gas jet, an out of adjustment spark ignitor, or any number of other issues. More details would be needed to give better help.

Hi Tigerfan1,
Based on the information in the OP, consider having a mobile RV tech pay a visit and fix the water heater. Make sure the tech is RVIA certified in propane appliance repair. The problem seems to be isolated to the water heater components. All of these components are pretty straight forward to replace, if you know the diagnostic process to confirm which part is guilty. Because this is your family, for this time, it might be better to have a professional take a look at the water heater.

That's a very good question BFinn, it took me a minute to catch the humor. The bus is 2 hrs away so can't get the model number but I do know it is a Suburban gas/electric with direct spark ignition. Good advice Gary, not only my daughter and her husband but also my 3 grandchildren are staying in it.

If your son in law is mechanically inclined, he could check the fire tube for Spider Webs. This is not an uncommon problem. This is the 3/4" diameter tube that is visible when you remove the outside grill.
Also, the Gas Orifice could be plugged with rust or other debris. This can be cleaned by removing the short Aluminum 1/4" gas line (easy to spot on the lower left when looking at the heater) where you will see the orifice once the tubing is removed. Using some compressed air (a can of cleaner for computer keyboard will work) blow out the debris. The orifice can be cleaned using compressed air and a Non Metalic pin such as a toothpick to remove any blockage. Careful not to damage the orifice size.
Reinstall the gas line being very cautious not to cross thread the fittings.

When the water heater on my old 1989 Winnebago Warrior stopped working it was a defective igniter board. About $100 fix.

The Suburban heater in the Newmar does not have an igniter board. You likely had an Atwood heater.
