Propane Installation on DSDP Imported to Canada

We are looking at buying privately a 2004 DSDP in the USA and bringing it back to register in Canada.

The Propane component , according to Newmar , is not shown as approved via a label, tag, etc on any coach they sell although they manufacture to RIVA Codes and NTSA Standards.

In order for Newmar to issue a Compliance Letter I would need to have the propane installation, piping certified which seems a bit onerous .

RIV will only address the Canadian wide standards and the propane section is a Provincial regulation and was told by them that they just need to see that it was designed and installed according at the regulated standards at the time it was manufactured.

Does anyone here have any idea if a 2004 unit has any label stating the gas installation was certified or built to any standard , that's really all I need and do not want to open a pandora's box here with regulators.

Thanks all

Mike

Both our '00 and '02 DSDP's had the RVIA emblem beside the entrance door near the grab handle on the outside.

Mike,
I'm guessing by your name you are planning to import this coach into MB?
I'm not sure what your provincial regulations are in this regard but I can tell you when I brought my 03 into Alberta there was Zero mention about the Propane system.
I got the recall clearance letters from both Newmar and Spartan, sent the paperwork to US Customs 72 hours before crossing, stopped at US customs to export the coach, went into Canada Customs with my bill of sale, clearance letters etc. Paid the GST and off I went. Next stop, Canadian Tire to do the RIV inspection which amounts to checking the serial (VIN) number and for Daytime Running Lights (which are standard on all Newmar coaches. They engage when the Park Brake is released)
Once you have that, you need to get an Out of Province inspection by an authorized shop so your can register it.
That's it. Simple as fallin off a log but not half as dangerous.

Side Note, I don't believe the Newmar dealers are doing anything special concerning the Propane system on the numerous coaches they bring into Canada.

The provincial fire regulation guy told me that as long as the coach had a sticker on it showing it passed factory spec when in what manufactured], that would suffice. For some reason Newmar customer service said they would not issue a clearance letter because modifications may have been made even though I told them that I just need a standard it was manufactured to. Maybe if I could get the name of someone who does the design specs for the coach would help so I could call them.

I don't want to make this molehill too much of a issue but there is no problem until there is one.

"gimlimike"......I know Canada can be a stickler on this stuff and a pain in the butt. If you go to the RVIA site The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association: About RVIA they describe how they regulate plumbing. Then refer to the NFPA Standards NFPA 1192: Standard on Recreational Vehicles

Do you think if you printed the documents from above and then coupled them with a photo of the RVIA sticker on the coach, that would suffice?

I would say, find a new "Official " that has a little bit of RV sense. There are hundreds of RV'S and Newmars in particular that are imported every year across the country. Both new and used without any issues pertaining to the propane systems. I think your government contact is just blowing smoke cause he's not sure.

Passenger Air Bags

Do your coaches have air bags ? Crazy question but RIV required bilingual signage for the airbags that required mtce but Newmar tells me that coaches do not have air bags. Can you guys confirm ?

I believe RIV is referring to "air bags", as in the passenger compartment to protect the passengers in the event of a accident and not the "air bags/springs" that the chassis rides on. Our 2005 does not have air bags but it does ride on air springs :-)

It's been close to 8 years since , I imported my coach , and there have been changes in the " Export from the USA " portion of the paperwork.
These posts should be read before you proceed.

http://www.irv2.com/forums/f258/buyi...us-218278.html

Remember you have to deal with the USA regulations; on exporting; before you can take the RV out of the country to register it in Canada , it used to be straight forward, and I haven't dealt with the new rules but it sounds like the changes were not for the better.

Thanks Skip, I think i will use a Broker to do the exporting paperwork for me, it may cost but its easier. i am dealing with the RIV and Fire Commissioner issues and that enough on my plate. This having fun is HARD !

On the propane issue i have that sorted now, regulation is 5 Year certification for belly tanks, found a local firm and the cost is not too onerous.
