Protecting floor under FWS rollers

We have a new 2014 BayStar 2903. Since we picked it up in Nov, we've not had a chance to really put it through it's paces, but expect to do so shortly. I noticed that there are several large rollers that go across the floor as the slide moves in and out. Do we need to protect the floor under the rollers and if so, what do we use? There is no mention of this in any Newmar literature.

Many folks (many different brands) have installed pieces of 1/8" thick stainless steel sheet pieces for the rollers to track on. It seems to have been a successful alteration. I DO NOT have slides, so I do NOT have direct experience with this, but as a machine shop owner, I just ordered a set of these sheared pieces for a friend who has this problem. I'll know more about it in a couple of weeks.

Check with Newmar. For the deisel pushers they had special mats to lay on the floor in front of the rollers. With the new slide system there are no rollers, but I'm sure you can still get the mats from them for your coach.

Best regards,
W.D.

Newmar can supply you with plastic pads that are much less likely to scratch the flooring. Usually used on the rigs with full wall slides and tile floors.
Our '02 DSDP never needed anything, but then we had the tile look vinyl tile and carpet. After 13 years we were getting some wear on the tile from the roller, but not bad and the carpet pile would come back up after a while too.

Call Newmar parts dept. They sell Slide Roller Protectors that work great! I installed them on my Essex as I was getting some marks from the Rollers. You will likely have to widen the gap between the floor and the end of the ramp in order to install the Protectors. Dremel makes a great wood bit to easily remove some of the wood. However, be cautious not to remove too much wood as you want the fitting kinda tight so the Protector can't pop out.

I had 7 protectors to install and it took me about 20 minutes each.

Good luck!

Dan can you expand on this? I have never looked at my rollers but would be interested in the floor protectors and just don't understand the meaning of "remove some wood". From where??

I purchased a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet from Lowes and made 10 inch wide strips to place under the slide rollers. At one end I taped it with painters tape since some of the slide rollers tend to push the carpet as the slide goes in.

Can't wait to see som pix--I have wood laminate flooring. A pebble got stuck to a roller and made a pretty good scratch. I've been trying to come up with some ideas. I saw where someone said to clean the rollers but to do so you have to roll the slide in a quarter turn of the roller at a time. What a PITA for a single person. I bought some cheap shamwhow' so was thinking of cutting and taping down???

Dan, Can you also provide more detail on the Dremel bit that you used.....maybe a picture of the bit? I have tried several different bits and none of them seem to work well enough.....I have not gotten one floor protector installed yet.

Newmar sells a hard plastic floor protector of 3 diferent lengths. I purchased the longest on for my Essex (32"??). These have a felt layer on the bottom and has done a good job protecting my floor. I have tried may different methods (carpet runners, plastic sheets and plastic cutting boards) and so far Newmars product is the best I've used.

I found these Dremel bits very effective on removing the wood NOT the tile. Becareful to leave the space a little tight so the Protector can't come out of the grove as the slide moves.

Hope this is helpful.

Put a thin magazine on the floor. The rollers will go right over them.

Please explain how you put the magazine down so that is covers 34" of travel in 8 different spots (which are the eight positions where rollers are). I am having a hard time understanding how you do this. If this makes sense, I'll give it a try.

Even though we have tile flooring I either sweep or vacuum the floor before bringing the driver and passenger side slides in. Only takes a couple minutes but might keep the tile intact. Did the same thing with the Dutch Star as the "tile" was vinyl squares and much softer than ceramic tiles are.
