Question about extended warranty on used Newmar
I am about to finalize a deal on a used 2006 newmar dutchstar with 46k on her. They are offering an extended warranty from starrv/interstate national of florida for 10k.Its the diamond coverage but dosent include wear and tear or seals and gasket...would be for 4 years or i think 90k miles.
Is it worth it?? The unit was well maintained and newmar quality...it would give me peace of mind but 10k is alot of repairs to break even.I only average 2k a year in miles
thanks!!!

Hi jenavet,
Ask the service manager who talks to the service contract company when you have a claim. If he says buy it here and I talk to the service contract company then that is good, get the contract. Dealer service departments know the correct words to say to get a claim approved. As to if it is worth it or not, tough call.
1. How much will the coach be used?
2. Contract cover automotive and coach problems?
3. Bumper to bumper coverage?
Whatever allows you to sleep at night is the way to go. If you are financing the unit the cost of the contract might be included in the loan. If you purchase the contract, it is not something you want to use. It's like buying any insurance. You get it hoping you do not need to use it.

Extended warranties about 50% profit to warrantor on average. As Clint said "Are you feeling lucky?"

well reading over the contract it appears they have a lot of outs.they have a wear and tear clause that states if a component fails and its out of the manufacturers mileage tolerance, its not covered.so say for an example the industry states an oe water pump should last 50k miles on a 400 isl motor, and it fails at 75k...the warranty company can reject the claim stating the thing failed beyond what the industry says it should last.
rust and corrosion...to be honest I bet 50% of failures could be attributed to rust and corrosion.radiators, alternators, turbos, slide out mechanisms etc...
the dealer is great and words the claim perfectly...but when the adjuster shows up it appears to be a different call

Contact Wholesale Warranties and see what they can offer. Got mine through them and have not been denied any claims. So far they have covered more than my premium.

I do not normally buy extended warranties on anything. We bought a '07 KSDP a year ago, my first diesel. I have read so many horror stories about huge bills for major repairs to a DP. That I really thought long and hard about the extended warranty.
I finally decide before we closed the deal, it was just to big a financial exposure if something major fails. But, I didn't like the pricy long term policy's sold by the dealers. So, I bought the Good Sam's extended warranty policy. I am not recommending the GS policy over any other plan.
My plan is: 1. Keep or get all systems maintained, 2. Test all fluids with Blackstone Labs, every six months. With two years of good luck and no problems, and a good familiarity with the rig, I will drop my Extended Warranty policy. My payment is quarterly, and if I have a claim, that doesn't get handled properly, I will drop it like a hot potato.
Those big buck, up front, long term polices lock you in.

The plan I would get would be included in my loan payment.I will check with the dealer and see how it works if I wanted to cancel the warranty if claims appear to be intentionally rejected.I received quotes from good sams and wholesale warranties and they were up in the 7-8k range with payments in the 400-to 500 a month!!

I currently have a good sam extended warrenty. It runs about 4k a year on an 07 essex. Seems funny you were getting such high quotes. We are thinking of putting the same amount in a savings account and adding to it each year in case of a big problem. We have had the plan two years and used it only once for a blown seal, they paid a small part and we paid the rest.

Asked about one on the Magna, cost was about $9,000 for four years. Turns out I should have bought it, but but the time the paperwork arrived at home it was too late.

Walk away from Extended Warrantees as fast & far as you can! Dealers push them because they make big profits on them. All the people that have bought them that I've talked to over the past 44 years RVing regret having bought them.
Major complaints are: Slow response times. Denial of claims, Arguments over cost of repairs Vs coverage. Exclusion of many repairs/claims, company going out of business.
BEWARE- BEWARE- BEWARE!

I purchased my 2002 6 years ago so it was 8 years old (58k miles) and the extended warranty was $5k Cdn for 4 years and 40K miles. 10K seems a little high but then again the coach is 10 years old. I didn't renew the warranty 2 years ago because it was high at about another $5k and the list of non covered parts expanded exponentially. The original $5k paid out about $4k in repairs. Since not having warranty for the past 2 years it's cost about $4k in repairs but some of these wouldn't have been covered anyway so I'm still ahead of the game but 2 years to go so who knows what will happen. The coach is running perfectly right now (knock on wood).
It comes down to what you are comfortable with but read the fine print on non covered items but you need to realize that you don't know how the coach was maintained before you bought it. BTW non covered items 2 years ago included the generator, fridge, suspension items (air bags etc..), electronics and cooling system. Basically they covered the motor if it blew up but only if it had maintenance records and you weren't doing the filter service.

I would never consider buying an ESP from a dealer. Shop around, you can do better. $10K seems pretty steep to me. As mentioned look at www.wholesalewarranties.com

I was a little late in responding, but was going to say "... take the 10k and put it away in an interest bearing account...". That way it's there if you need it and if not you have made money for yourself and not the dealer or the insurance company.
