Rear A/C unit Crapped Out!

Frustration is finding out that the rear AC/Heat Pump crapped out in the coach you have had for just 22 months. Happiness is finding out the Dometic has 2 Year warranty on them. Will make an appointment to get them checked, when I get back home next week.

I'd call or notify Newmar or A/C manufacturer now, you're close enough to the deadline they might resist if you wait.

When you say 'crapped out' if you give a bit more information maybe someone can help with a simple solution.

I've been having my own issues with the AC / HP replacements and have to add that I don't normally buy extended warranties but the $260 investment for the 5 year Dometic extended warranty just save me about $3000. The new rates went up from 3 years ago but I will pay the $320 in order to cover both units for a total of 5 years.

It runs all day and can't cool the bedroom enough to get down to 72, so it can shut off. It's 82 outside.

Depending on the humidity, that may be all it can really do. Did it do better before or is this the first time it hasn't cooled well. Does the other AC cool significantly better.

The front AC has no problemcoolin the front part of the coach to 69. I have a fan sitting in the door to the bedroom to blow cool air into the bedroom. The rear AC turned on at 8 this morning and hasn't turned off.

I've had 2 of the 3 units in our coach replaced... that happened within the first 6 months after delivery.

A reasonable rule of thumb is that the discharge air (just inside a vent) should be about 20 degrees cooler than the intake (warm) side.

Can you hear the compressor coming on and going off? If it's constantly on, it might be iced up. Also you might take the cover off and see if the coils are open and not blocked.

That's about as far as I'd take it if it's still under warranty.

My rear air quit cooling after 18 months. freon leaked out. In march I had trouble with another one. I did a reset on the thermostat and it started working correctly.

Bill, my front unit never did cool well from day one. You need to measure your temperature differential ( TD) ( air temp coming out, relative to going IN). It should be in the upper teens...mine was only 11, which will NEVER cool a coach.

Get a qualified service center to measure and document, then let them contact Dometic and get it replaced. I understand there are LOTS of these units out there with similar issues.

We are less the 3 months into our new 2015 Dutch Star and the rear unit, when in heat pump mode, makes very odd oscillation sounds. In fact it seems like it works too hard for too little output. Asking Newmar to figure it out. Will attach a recording of the sound in an mp3 file.
