Rear awning option for Dutch Star: worth having it?

(Originally posted in the Newmar Owner's group on Facebook)

I have a question for anyone with a 2015 Dutch Star: did you order the second Girard G2000 side awning (back awning)? We notice that the standard awning runs from the front of the coach to a point about 2/3 the way back. The additional awning is a $4K option and we were wondering if it's a worthwhile purchase. Thoughts? TIA!

Hi MikeGriffin,
I do not have a new coach on order. However, if I did, I would purchase the awning so the entertainment side of the coach is in the shade. My reasoning is based on how I use the coach. The coach is in use during the hottest part of the year. The additional awning provides the space needed to make the entertainment area much more enjoyable.

If you have dogs, which I do, it will give me more usable space to put their dog pen in a shaded area.

If you get the Girard Nova awnings, you get the following for $5,117 (minus your dealer discount) :
  • front and back awnings
  • wind sensor
  • remote control
  • LED lighting

Tom, do those awnings "hide" (look like part of the body)? I didn't see them on the option sheet.

Mike, the Nova awnings stow in a similar manner to the standard Girard G-2000 model. The difference with the Nova is they angle down to give you a bit more shade over your patio area.

I have the two Nova awnings on my Dutch Star and they are fantastic. Here's a photo of the Novas on a Mountain Aire.

The Girard G2000 and Nova awnings are both "integrated" and blend with the top rail. They are really quite beautiful. Personally, I like the full awning down the whole length of the door side. For what it is worth.

We have both of the Girard awanings on our 11 Mountian Aire. It is alot of awaning when you put both out. I have not been able to use them much this winter. Does any one know what wind speed they are set to retract at? On a side note my FWS topper is a Girard and the thread in the seams has rotted or fallingapart and Girard has agreed to replace the topper material for free!! I just had to pay for shipping and have to replace it myself.
Good Luck
JP

We like ours they are integrated and look awesome. Very useful with the led lights that extend across the whole motorhome, lights look good even when the awnings are not extended .

All - thanks a lot! I didn't even know that the Nova awnings were an option. We'll definitely get them. An extra $1100 (before discount) for the angle, LEDs and sensors sounds fair.

Hi Mike,

You mentioned that you didn't see them on the option sheet? That means you might not have the most up-to-date one. The one I have is dated 10/31/2014 in the upper right hand corner.

The LED lighting on the awnings is excellent. I thought that maybe it was just there to look cool but it's actually very functional as well!

Here's a shot from our first weekend outing, just wanted to show you how the LEDs light up the entire patio area of the coach.

They should include a pic like this in the DS brochure. I don't have my DS yet, but this is sure making the wait a little more difficult. :-)

Tom - thanks. My order sheet is dated last May. Know where I can get the latest?
