Rear Marker Light Lens Removal

My center rear marker light wasn't working so I pulled the lens cover off this morning to "change the bulb". To my surprise it is an LED setup. Not much I could do, although I did tap it with my fingers, so I put the lens cap back in place. (Note that it now lights but not as bright as the others)

I assume the lens cap seals to the rubber piece below and no further sealant is required or should I remove the lens cap again and apply some silicone to the lens cap itself? Just fearful that could result in a difficult time removing later without breaking the lens cap.

My marker/clearance lights are not LED. When I was changing a bulb a while back, the lens broke in my hand, weakened by age and exposure. Same thing happened a few months later. I now keep a couple of each color on hand. They're cheap and readily available.

As to sealant, I mount the lens dry, and then spread a thin coating of silicone around the perimeter by finger so it seals over everything from paint to lens.
