Ya, be careful going too long. if you are backing up to a parking block, it will push the flap against your tire and you will rip it right off if you continue backing. Don't ask how I know

Removed mine on the way to Alaska

I removed mine before entering Canada, while on the way to Alaska. Removing it was a suggestion from some friends that made the trip a few years earlier. Before removing it we would always find gravel and dirt all over the front of our Wrangler, but after we took it off the toad stays much cleaner, no gravel on the Jeep, and no more chips in the windshield. I'd suggest you save the money. You'll be happier with the results.

I am now a member of AFBG (Ad Flap Be Gone). Man ... that sucker was heavy! My wife is happy ... no more reflection of the sun in her eyes (from the chrome Newmar ad) when driving the chase car.

Here you go, now get after it!!

I took mine off, a few months ago, after reading the comments here. Toad sure, seems to be cleaner than with it.

Also, there has been a few times at night, I've gotten out of bed and bungee corded it up to keep the wind from banging it on the chassis. Don't miss that problem.

Thanks, although Don's solution is quite elegant, the old style flap is significantly taller and would require cutting square steel and also cutting the top off the flap.

Why does removing the flap make it better? Any detectives with a theory?

We've gone naked. Ours was bent from being smashed between the hitch and a curb. Ugly. It stayed in Pahrump when we left. No more rock flinging at the toad. Probably doubled our mpg ---- or not. Too big a vanity plate.

Let me ask the why question again. What is the reason that removing the rock guard make it work? Does it change the air flow such that rocks and dirt do not go back to the toad but up .....

Difficult to prove without video but apparently, on some roads, the guard will strike the road on bumps and dips ... even when raised to 6 inches. At 4 inches it is very likely. Especially on gassers with long body overhang. This causes rocks/objects to bounce.

I took mine off a long time ago, it was a Winnebago hard rubber type, it kept getting stuck when I parked at the football games and had to back up over a curb in the tailgating section. It's now hanging in the shed I don't miss it, and the toad doesn't look any worst for the wear.
