Replace 12v fuse

The fuse for my dash 12v receptacle was blown so I pulled it and replaced it with the appropriate fuse. I went to put this new fuse in and there was a bit of a spark. I've replace auto fuses before and never saw a spark. Should I have shut power off using the battery disconnect switches before replacing a fuse?

Sounds like you have a short to ground at or down line from the fuse.

Is something plugged in? If there is a load present...there will be a spark. If you don't have anything plugged into that receptacle and it sparks..you have a short...or at the very least another circuit with a load that's wired to the same circuit.

Nothing is plugged in that I know of. The dash radio was on. But it is on another circuit, because it was running even with the blown fuse. What is strange (to me) is that this 12v adapter was out and so was the Dirt Devil whole house vac was also inoperative. I thought that the vac was 110v AC (on an inverted plug). The vac wasn't being used at the time.

Had the same issue with replacing the fuse on our 12 volt outlet added by the dealer. Turned out to be a defective outlet that would spark as soon as something was plugged in, burn out the fuse and then, when trying to replace the fuse, the new fuse would spark and burn out. Replaced the outlet and the problem was solved.

I called Newmar CS this morning. Josh went out to the floor and they confirmed that there is nothing else on the circuit. Well ... Maybe the second 12v that I had them install on the dash left of the steering wheel.

At this point, the 12v is working. Not sure what caused it to quit working we've been on some relatively rough roads recently. Newmar CS says if it blows again that they will have to do something (we are still under warranty). Did you replace the outlet or did a tech? Did Newmar ship one to you, or did you just purchase one?
