Replacing House batteries

2014 Ventana - (6). Batteries

Getting close to replacing house batteries, prior to hitting the road for an extended trip

Planning on cleaning up tray and repainting, so no batteries for a couple of days

We full time in rig, plugged into 50a shore power currently.

What happens when batteries are removed ? Am I going to loose power in the coach , or does inverter bypass somehow

Thanks guys

You should have 120 volt power but no power to the 12 volt things like T stats, water pump, lights, .......

Should have all 12 and 110 systems shut off and disconnected. I recommend you purchase your batteries before stating the change out. Makes it easier and less chance of problems. AGM batteries make care of batteries easier and last longer. I mark all positive cables with red tie wraps and all negative with black tie wraps. Might take a picture to assist if you get into problems with cables going all over the place. Costco is one place to check. The sell Interstate batteries like CW but are about 60$ each less.

I second Tom's idea to take pictures of the wiring, and marking the cables. Even though I just have 2 little puny 6V batteries in my battery bay, it saved me a ton of trouble during the replacement process.

I number the batteries 1 thru 4, then mark the cables using red and white electricians tape. THen I use a sharpie and write 1+ for cables going to the Number 1 battery - positive, and 2 - for the cable end going to number 2 bat - neg terminal etc.

There is no proof AGM batteries last any longer at all. My properly maintained batteries lasted 7 years before I changed them out several weeks ago. AGM are cleaner, and you don't have to water them like lead acid batteries.

I bought my Interstate golf cart batteries from Costco

I have seen several studies that say AGM batteries last longer so I'm not sure where you read otherwise. Are the warranty on them longer? Glass mat batteries can withstand storage longer without hurting them.

AGM studies or marketing hype ?

Sam's Club 6 volt, flooded batteries have the same warrantee as their 6 volt AGM ones. One year replacement.

AGM have a slower self discharge rate, but flooded batteries tolerate sitting at a partial discharge better.

Thanks again guys
AGM’s attractive from the no maintenance side. Conventional from the $$ side
Decisions, decisions....

I just did this, not because they were old, but because they were DOA. Took a few pics, put a zip tie through the wire holes as I removed the batteries and then worked backwards. Don’t tighten everything until all batteries are in place and then once everything looks good, tighten it all up.

Batteries

My recently cleaned and updated 2003 MADP compartment. Removed drawer all new slide bearings and paint. AGMs off gas much less so compartment stays much cleaner.
