RV Driver Hire

I may have a need to deliver a 2015 Newmar Canyon Star from Phoenix to Rhode Island in the next week or two, and would like to know if any of you have experience hiring co-pilots or drivers?

Seems that someone looking for a one-way trip to the Northeast would be a candidate, but obviously experience and safe driving record are key.

Also, since the motorhome is set up for towing and has all the tow gear, that could be an incentive for a prospective driver / team.

Any advice would be appreciated!

The only “candidate” I would have for this scenario is a licensed, bonded professional RV delivery service. Too many potential pitfalls in just finding someone who wants a one-way trip somewhere. And, as for towing their vehicle as an incentive, it (a) likely wouldn’t be set up for towing, and (b) could easily create some serious liability issues.

If you have an experienced RVer friend that would accompany you, that’s one thing; just picking up someone looking for transportation to the Northeast is quite another in my book. YMMV

Only one ad I saw in FMCA mag. was from an "experienced, references, CDL license" retired firefighter at 530-321-1241.

Otherwise, suggest you google "RV transporters" and contact them to see if any of their new coach delivery drivers would be interested in a "back haul" to move yours for you. MOST new coaches are driven from Indiana to dealers all over the country, and the drivers have to get back to Indiana for the next run.

Also, you could contact NIRVC in Phoenix to see if they have any suggestions. 520-442-2500

I’m from Maine, in Tennessee, on my way to Tucson. Should be there early next week. I’d need to get back to Tucson after Rhode Island and can only fly first class due to my age and demeanor. And I need the DW as navigator because I get lost a lot. What’s the pay like?

Thanks (to some of you) for taking time to give useful advice.

I actually did search for RV Transporters and found a few that I have approached for quotations.

One (Synergy RV Transport, Mission ) responded quickly and the rate quoted for a gas coach is about $1.38 per mile plus approximately $205 for tolls, for 'back haul' as suggested. The rate is slightly higher for diesel coaches. This company is based near Elkhart IN and requires drivers to have significant over-the-road experience, current DOT physical, a 'for-hire' license, and 10-years of clean driving record. These companies seem to offer drivers between $0.84 and $1.19 per mile.

I figured I could move it myself with a co-driver for about 85% of the quote including contingencies, but I would have to use air miles and a week of my time to do it.

So... we'll see how things go.
