Here is a pretty good price on the Winegard Traveler. We're kind of leaning this way to replace our dome also. We have bought other items from these people before and seem to have pretty good prices and fast shipping.

We love our Winegard SWAW Direct satellite, installed over our old DOME (it died) in Canada - you have a great price - enjoy and it is superior to my previous DOME (limited to BEV (Ca), Direct-TV and Dish) and BEV (Bell) does not service southern USA anymore ..I figure they must have an agreement (sleeping in the same bed) as Direct-TV - SHAW is good anywhere, Canada-USA-Mexico) and no change of programs when you travel and they do not care where you are as long as you pay the monthly $ -
Quality of image (HD) is superior

Replaced my KVH dome with the Trav'ler. I have been very happy. I push the power button, the Trav'ler raises up, locks on to all 3 DSIH satellites in approx 2 minutes. Total installed was just south of $1600.00.
No lag when switching sats, no problem with rain, etc...

As long as it's a Satellite who cares.
I have had a MoSat on the roof of our motor home for the last 12 years and have never had a problem with it.
Just push a button up it gose and fines the Sats.
Just a thought.

To ALL:
THANK YOU for all the continuing info, suggestions, and recommendations regarding this dog gone satellite system change out dilemma. It's all SO VERY helpful. Without folks like you, I don't know how anyone without a working knowledge of RV satellite TV systems could even begin to figure out where to begin or how to proceed.
Got a question. So when ya pull out the old existing dome to prep roof for install of a new unit, I guess it's a matter of pulling off the old dome that was housing the old roof top track, plugging old holes (sealing roof), then proceeding to re-wire as necessary followed by mounting the new unit ??????
In general, is this correct??

Yes that is how it can be done, if there is space.
On our Fleetwood there wasn't enough room for the Trav'ler where the dome was. So the dome was left in place and the Trav'ler was added further back where there was more room.
Here is how it was on the Fleetwood.
Here is where the factory put it on the Dutch Star.

We started with Winguard Trav'ler-DirectTV; about 8 months ago. We've been very pleased. We love that it's all automatic with the touch of a button. If we do run into a problem w/ blocking trees, we skip TV and enjoy good music and a good book.

PDR John: Yup, ours will be in the position shown on your DSDP pic (ie. more fwd.).
rosannemarie: Thanks for the input. It's looking like the Trav'ler is the way to go.

Satellite Dome Dilema..UPDATE
TO ALL:
Thanks again to all who have provided info to help us out. However, we haven't made much progress yet.
Since the last post (above), my wife has returned from 2 months of radiation treatments, and, as is often the case, one day she began trying different things with the Direct TV remote and, as well, plugging in and unplugging the phone type connector cable from the AV200HD switch box (in mid coach cabinet above refrigerator) to the King Dome control panel (above driver). Long story short, the satellite signal all of a sudden came in again and we could rcv. SOME (not all) satellite channels. That control panel display now shows, and seems locked on, "ERROR: AZ FAULT" (whatever THAT means??) but we're still getting SOME satellite channels. This is the control display that previously showed "ENCODER FAIL" leading us to believe we needed a new satellite system. Anyway, switching now to a number of other channels (ie. Weather Channel, various other channels, and SOME movie channels) only gets us a black screen followed by the ol "Searching for Satellite Signal" message !!! ....even though as mentioned, we DO receive good satellite signals on OTHER channels. GO FIGURE
Since we believe that there is a problem with the "AVS200HD SMART SOUCE" box (the one having the TV1, TV2, TV3, and TV4 buttons) I did purchase a new Smart Souce box and will attempt to switch out that box this weekend. We think, and were told, that this Smart Source box was probably defective since two of our remote tv's, (the one above psngr. seat fwd, and the one in ouside entertainment bay) are malfunctioning and display only, grey, wavy distorted pictures. Main TV in living area, and TV in bdrm. display good pictures.
Ya know......this stuff can drive an old man over the edge,...ahhh, well maybe, I'm already over the edge and don't know it
Again, THANKS all of you again.
Steve & Lynette

I just replaced my KVH Direct in motion with the Travler. I prefer HD and heading to full time want it without my ground dish. I really considered leaving the dome on and just installing the travler as well. Being able to test for reception as suggested is nice. The Travler takes a lot longer to get into position than the KVH but that is not really an issue. I installed it myself so the cost was closer to $1200. One modification I added was a magnetic switch to send the signal in parallel to my crank up dish to alarm me if either is up when I start to move.
The KVH is secured for shipping if anyone is interested. Just remove two tie wraps, plug the power supply in to AC or directly to DC, add any Direct Tv SD receiver and you have satellite.

Steve - are you sure about that cable? I have a River Park AV200HD, and there is no "phone type" cable going to it. It has component/composite/audio in and out cables, a power cable, and RCA type jacks for IR emitters to control things from the TV locations. No phone jack.
"AZ FAULT" means the dome is unable to turn the internal dish from side to side. (AZ mean Azimuth). So if it's pointed at a satellite now, it can't turn to a different one. But if you're on DirecTV, it shouldn't need to change satellites. Can you go into the satellite setup section of the menus on your DirecTV receiver and check the signal strengths? All you really care about is the 101 satellite. Also check to see what kind of dish it's set for. Should be 18" round.
Before you spend the money on the Smart Source box (or can't send it back). Swap the cables on the back of the existing one and see if the problem with the displays moves with the cable. For example, if TV1 is good and TV2 isn't, swap those cables and see if TV2 is good now. If it is, and the selector on the front was set to the same input, then it's probably the box. If not, then it's the cable or the TV itself.

G'morning Joe:
As you suggested, we had already done the switch out of cables (TV1, TV2, etc.) and had already determined it was a problem with the AVS200HD Smart Source box so we purchased a replacement on E-Bay for $130.00 !! Anyway, just a few minutes ago, I switched out the old Smart Source and installed the new one and, wonder of wonders, ALL TV's now work perfectly.
What still has me confused is that the King Dome (Trac King) CONTROL PANEL (located in cabinet above the driver, still displays in the display window the msg. .."ERROR: AZ FAULT" on the top line, and ..."St 0" on the right side of the 2nd line of the display. Also, AFTER I switched out the Smart Source box and ALL TV's worked clearly, we STILL couldn't get a number of channels. So, as before, we had to unplug the phone jack type connector from the HDTV CONV box sitting atop the new Smart Source box. This "HDTV CONV" box was part of this system when we bought the rig, and techs at Nappanee DID put in a new HDTV CONV box during one of our visits back in about 08. This HDTV CONV box has 5 ports arranged horizontally on the face of a metal box about measuring 7" x 6 1/4" x 1 !/2". The 5 ports are labled (L to R) as follows: ANT REC DATA IDD PWR. The ANT, and REC ports have what looks like coax cables attch'd, while that DATA port (an oval port with pins sticking out) had nothing connected. That IDD port is where that phone like jack connector is plugged into that runs to the panel above the driver. And, finally, the PWR port has the power plug in it. Don't know if it matters, but this power plug is similar to some of our phone and MIFI power cords in that one end is a LARGE black block about 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1' which plugs into one of the outlets at the rear of our component cabinet, and the other end which plugs into this HDTV CONV box is single little pin type connector.
Well, anyway, as mentioned, we did just switch to one of the NON working channels (it was the Weather Channel) and after getting the usual "Searching For Satellite Signal" msg., we unplugged that IDD (phone jack type) waited about a minute and replugged it in and did, for about 10 minutes receive this non working channel (Weather CH) which, however, then cut out and went back to "Searching for Signal,etc."... We switched back to one of the working channels (in this case FOX News) and it has come in very well and been on since. For what it's worth, we both strongly believe the picture quality on the channels we do rcv. is much, much, much, improved as if we're now rcv'g. HD for the first time.
I don't know what the heck is going on with the display on our King Dome Control Panel above the driver which now has settled on the display msg.: "ERROR: AZ FAULT".......but the channels we do rcv. come in perfectly while a number of other channels don't come in at all unless we try the unplug, replug routine.
WHAT A MYSTERY!!!!
