Sewing table for the coach

My wife quilts and does other sewing projects and suggested to me I should build a sewing table to keep the dinette free from sewing projects during the day. You would not think you could add a 6’ by 30” table in a coach without creating a major blockage but she had the further novel idea to put it under the raised master bed, which intrigued me, so I got to work.

What resulted was a padded table big and strong enough to hold a sewing machine, cutting board and pressing area with foldable legs that extend only to the bed frame leaving plenty of leg room and an unrestricted front so no added legs to navigate when sewing. It fits in one of the open storage compartments under the bed (as shown) and can be set up in under 5 minutes. Click image for larger version

My wife is also a quilter, and is now interested in this innovative solution. You mention “raised bed”. Is this different than the stock bed? Nice job!

That's ingenious! A great way to utilize a seldom used space during the day. Way to think outside the box....or in this case, at the edge of the box.

I'm not going to tell my quilter wife I saw that here. I'll just put it together and show her as a surprise; that's going to be worth all sorts of points !!! Thanks for the idea guys: priceless, lol.

Great ideas. Well done to you both.

Couple of questions.

One it looks very low to the floor so is she using a low chair?

Two. What is it covered with?

As a retired commercial sewing machine tech this would have to be the best setups I've seen for cramped spaces.

I'm just going to forget I saw this, and move along quickly. Brilliant job, creative thinking, but all the same very dangerous to others!

Quilting is not a hobby, it is an addiction and I am trying to stop my enabling behaviors

Maybe so, however it brings pleasure to many people and I have seen some beautiful quilts.

Great idea. I modified our bed frame by installing an adjustable frame. I think there is room to do this modification as well. Maybe an led strip along the bottom of the bed frame. More projects for the endless hobby.

That is ingenious! Adding this to my wish list for the RV. Does your wife use a Featherweight in the RV?

Thanks all. Here is a reply to the questions raised.

The bed is stock, it is used for this application in the raised position. Also nice because you can easily walk around someone using the table to get to the rear bath.

The table top is 26”, so lower by 4”or so from a standard table top. The height was custom for my 5’4” quilter so her forearms laid flat on the padded top while working on the sewing machine.

The cover is one layer of quilt batting and a home decor fabric folded over and stapled on the back. The top edges of the table were sanded to round the edge with a rotary sander, pretty easy.

She uses her heavy Pfaff, the top has 6 foldable legs with locking hinges(see pic) and slotted feet some that are parallel to the table some perpendicular so the table does not slide. Two of the legs are in the middle of the table and one is right underneath where the sewing machine goes so with the 1/2”plywood, plenty of support.

The two notches for the gas struts along with a piece that fits underneath helps provide support so an empty table won’t tilt forward if one were to press on the forward edge.

Here is the hardware used. Note the foot frame at ,the bottom of the bed is wider than the partition frame. Also the back two corner legs extend to the bottom of the storage area.

I’ll post the pics next as the app is acting funny.

My wife is a terrific quilter, just some tongue and cheek. She sews on our dinette now, not sure once we shift to the table and chair set up in new coach. This solution may come to play if we head out long term. Right now her two studios will have to suffice. I also have seen some beautiful quilts, we keep a bunch in the coach to help fend off the winter chill.

Great idea....make about ten of them for sale (put a hinge in the center for easier shipping) and then you and your wife will both have a hobby!
