This Service Solution does not imply any special warranty coverage. Standard warranty guidelines and coverage apply. This Service Solution is provided to assist Dealers/Customers in resolving the issue of Fan Drive Gear Box Vent clogging to prevent oil leaking out of the Vent or the Output shaft

Applicable Vehicles

2010 HDX mechanical Fan drive
Symptoms

Oil leaking out of vent stack or oil leaking out of the output shaft seal


Solution:

Relocate the vent to the davenport away from the hub. To do the relocation, follow the drawing TBBN210617 page 8

Thanks for posting the article. That is very straight forward. I can source all those parts from the local hardware store for less than $10. I will be doing this tomorrow, and will post up the pictures.

I only mentioned it was copied from the manual so you would know it is from a good source. I was looking because I want to check the level on mine after reading this thread. Also, was looking for oil level plug, found this.

Steve...Yes, the oil is coming out of the vent tube tip, running down the side and then across the top of the gearbox, leaving what looks like a grease river. Extending it has been solving the issue. The only thing I don't get is why some have the issue and others don't. It's leaking has nothing to do with driving habits.

Almost all grease gun extensions are threaded on both ends (I believe 3/8"). If you buy the extension, the grease fitting on the end of the hose unscrews.

Yes on the factory extension. If you look at the photo I posted, there is a threaded coupling between the extension and the vent tip. The vent tip is just a small threaded tip with holes drilled on two sides.

All you need for the job is the grease gun hose and a female coupling. The OEM extension already has one coupling that connects the breather tip to the extension tube. You need one more to add in the length of grease gun hose. The coupler is just a pipe fitting and can be bought at Home Depot.

Once installed, I hose clamped the breather to the fan arm. I used a hose clamp because I don't want a tie wrap to get hot and break, allowing the breather tube to flop around and into the fan. I also could have used straight pipe and just extended the breather straight up with piping, but I feared something that small and tall breaking off. Here is a photo of the breather end attached to the fan frame.

"quadrail53"......You may be right about the heat issue. Once they replace the fan blade, I may install a shield. I see plenty of frame bolts where I could add on a tin shield using the existing bolts.

We mostly drive our coach in warm weather. We had a service appointment in Michigan. We left on a very cold, icy morning. At our first stop I noticed a few drops of oil on the front of my Jeep. I searched all over the engine and the only place I could see any trace of oil was on the fan gearbox.

I think it might be possible that when the oil is cold and thick there may be more of a chance that the oil will plug up the vent and then leak as the gearbox warms and the oil expands. Also some people may let their coach warm up more before driving off. And some people don't even look for the oil since they are having someone else service their coach. And then some people have Spartans...

I posted text and a picture of the factory solution, a couple posts previous to this one for those that didn't see it. With a Sept 2017 date for the solution, it is a shame they don't do this on the new coaches.

Mine new from the factory had evidence of a leak. I asked the freightliner rep at newmar to extend it, and he said it was not approved. I wish I had that bulletin, as I would have forced the issue.

If anyone is doing FPU, then make a point of mentioning this to your tech on day 1, so that you can visit with the FL rep by 3pm and have it on the work list for day 2 or 3.
