I am in Tampa at the Pelican and NKK rally so I have not been keeping up with the developments in this saga, thus I just was able to get back on the internet and read about and to have assisted in the diagnosis... just wish I had not had to experience 24 hours on I-70 waiting for the tow truck, etc. in order to know from a first hand experience what may have happened.

When I first was towed to a Cummins coach care facility, Cummins said they would consider it their bill intially, but if it turned out to be a Spartan issue (which it was after the melting tube diagnosis) Cummins billed Spartan and there was never an issue about all the bills including the towing bill. All total, the cost was just shy of $2000. Spartan also paid our motel bill, so I am hopeful you will won't have to pay up front either.

CWG, you assisted more than you know!!!

Freightliner was just about to pull the turbo apart, having diagnosed that as the cause of the oil leak. I told them about your suggestion on the dipstick tube and waddya know, they checked it and found there was indeed a hole in the tube. The technician (and I use the term loosely) was a bit embarrassed.

Just did the crawl around under the coach!!! On mine the dipstick tube(Black Plastic) runs close to the intake side of Turbo So cool. The Hot area is about 5"away and the rubber boot connecting intake to Turbo is the same, So I 'Should' be OK.
I am going to mention this to the Newmar Dealer to see what they say.

Rick

Rick, when Chuck first suggested this as my problem I looked too and thought there was plenty of room between the turbo and the dipstick tube so that wasn't my problem. I guess with the massive heat of constant mountain climbing I was very wrong. If I were you I would wrap mine in some kind of insulation, that's about all the new tube had different from the old one.

Now for the update, I am in Deming NM and SO glad to be away from Tucson. Freightliner did accept payment from Spartan, but they "accidently" drug their heels for so long that Spartan was closed by the time the paperwork was done. They then "found" that Spartan had shorted them $98 + change, and they wouldn't let me leave until the bill was paid in full. So I either had to pay it or stay another night (at $100/night) to fight with Spartan tomorrow. I paid it and will talk to Spartan in the next few days.
I also think someone from Spartan has been reading this thread, when I mentioned that Freightliner was jacking up the towing bill by $200. They said the towing charge was too high and demanded to pay the tow company directly!

I will say that the upgrade from ISM450 to ISM500 is very noticeable, and I picked up a solid 1+ mpg.

CSX4350 can you tell us more about the ISM 450 upgrade to 500? Where did you have it done, what componets did they change and how much does it cost?

They told me it was all software, no hardware differences. The original quote to do it was $600, but it actually cost about $360. The Freightliner/Cummins shop that did the repairs did the upgrade. I probably could have gotten it done cheaper but I wanted to make sure my warranty stayed intact.

That's a bargain for Cummins to do it.

Many have reported costs in the thousands for Cummins to do that.
