Slideout Awning

I just noticed that the awning on the front driver side slideout on my 05 Essex has separated. Is this an easy fix or the whole mechanism needs replacement? I would welcome any thoughts and/or suggestions.

Happy camping to all!!

Slide out topper

I just replaced both toppers on my 2004 Dutchstar. You just need to replace the fabric not the hardware. Got my fabric from a independent place in Indiana, was around $300.00 for both toppers which was a heavier fabric than original. Would be helpful to have another person for the install.

Thanks, Tigerfan1. Did you have to take the mechanism off the motorhome?

Just had both toppers on our motorhome done this spring and no the hardware did not come off of the coach. The topper edges slide into a grove on both the slideout and coach hardware. You do need help to feed the material and guide it evenly thru the tracks.

Separated... Could you provide a little more description of what occurred?

gmarsha2: I appreciate the feedback. Would you care sharing what type of material and where you purchased it?

Kind regards,

Slide out awning

No need to remove the mechanism but will need to line up holes on the end of the awning tube and put a bolt or cotter pin in to prevent the spring mechanism from unwinding when you remove the fabric. Good luck.

Unfortunately I cannot recall where I purchased my slide out awnings when we replaced them however I was able to remove the old ones and install the new fabric with the help of my wife. It wasn't too hard and really didn't take that much time to do so. Whomever I purchased them from included complete instructions on how to do so. I have also been told that in many cases they have quite a bit of extra material on the roll and some have been able to reverse them rather than have to replace them.

If the vinyl has separated from the fabric in center the it can be removed until you get it replaced.
Here is a thread on replacement.
One of the many links found in QT's 1 & 2.

We found our material in Mercedes Texas at the Donna Flea Market. There are several vendors that cater to RV needs and were very good. We also did a change in color from white to black which pleased the DW. Hopes this helps....
