Spartan Recall

Newmar Corporation is recalling 600 model year 2017-2018 Dutch Star, 2016-2018 Mountain Aire and London Aire, and 2012-2018 Essex and King Aire motorhomes built on a Spartan Motors chassis. The ball joints on the independent front suspension (IFS) modules can loosen and separate, leading to a partial loss of steering.

If loose ball joints are not detected they may eventually separate from their mating part. The result could be partial loss of steering control which could increase the risk of a crash.

Newmar will notify owners, and Spartan service centers will remove, clean, apply thread locker, reinstall and torque the ball joints as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 21, 2017. Owners may contact Spartan at 1-800-543-4277 to locate a qualified service center or contact Newmar customer service at 1-574-773-7791. Newmar’s number for this recall is 17004.

Will Newmar get Spartan chassis fixed on units they are building from this point on??? I have a May build date on a Spartan chassis???

As the church lady on SNL used to say "Well isn't that special"

And so the fun begins! We just took delivery 5 days ago!

Very interesting! We drove our first (and only) Newmar a couple of weeks ago, a 2014 or 2015 Essex on the K2. The steering and front end ride were absolutely horrible. We wrote it off as our lack of experience with Comfort Drive which perhaps wasn't to our taste.

Last week we happened to mention it to another longtime RVing friend, and he commented it sounded like the ball joints were shot.

Wonder if it was actually the issue described in the recall?

I would encourage you to drive another Newmar. What you've described is very uncharacteristic of the comfort drive system. I've recently purchased a 17 model London Aire. The handling is much better than my last 45' coach. I enjoy driving this one, the last one was job!

Actually the recall is by Spartan not Newmar. Newmar notifies owners but if I remember correctly and you have registered with Spartan they to will send you notice. You can also add your VIN on the NHTSA website and get notices that way.

Wow, maybe we lucky this time around..the last 3 DP we had ,have been on Spartans....the last one a 2012 was terrible and the service We got at Spartan in Mi was even worst, terrible, almost to the point the tech outright lied to us..but not quite...and then seeing the Entegra people's problems, decided to get our new 17 MADP on a freigthliner...they had 2 coaches to choose from same options...1 Spartan and 1 Freightliner...took the Fl only because of the service aspect...Chuck
