Stair Cover FAIL
2011 Ventana: Electric stair cover stopped working.
Here's why - you can see where the gearbox has pulled away from the motor. Replacement Duff-Norton Linear Actuator on order from Amazon.

I was installing the cable for my DirecTv box and stood on the cover while it was extended. I'm a big guy and broke the cover in half. I didn't damage any parts, just pulled the screws out. The screws used were 1/2" when they should have been at least 3/4". I replaced them all and now it's very sturdy.

This has been a problem for a while. Our 04 Essex had this happen in 05 and I had to change the attachment for actuator so it wouldn't pull it self a part. The travel was to long which then caused the motor to pull it's self a part.

Main reason I don't use my cover. We've learned to live with the cover down. Have replaced motor that had broken gears but just leave it alone. I would rather not get stuck with it in the up position.

I added a bracket on the end to prevent this from happening. I do have photos but can't access from my I Pad. Soon as I get back to my real computer, I'll send them to you. With the bracket, you should be able to salvage the old one. They are pricy from Newmar.

Search the internet, there are other suppliers that sell lift motors as like those at Newmar but for much less. They are not Duff-Norton, but should do the job. Mine works fine, tho I don't use mine much.

I broke mine also and replaced with motor from Amazon. When looking at the way it works, the rod should extend far enough so the actuator cams past center so then it would be less pressure on rod and gears. Hope that makes sense.

Waiting on parts for my 2013 CS, Lippert Components- Coach Step. The Gear Step bolt and one step bolt have sheared off for No Apparent reason. The step is only 16 months old, but has sat for two winters for a total of 6 months. So, the items ARE Not covered by any warranty. First time in 35 years of owning motor homes I have had any step problems!

Try this, it's pretty simple. You may want to source better material but when I repaired mine, I went with some odds and ends I have kicking around.

Dennis, your mod looks stout! I had though about a quick and dirty solution by wrapping wire around the motor and gearbox to buttress it.
