Suburban water heater problems

I have a sw12de gas and electric water heater in my 2006 dutch star. About 15 months ago the propane side stopped working but the electric worked just fine. I took it in for service and they replaced a bad control board and also the ignitor for good measure. That cost me about $230. Now the same problem is happening again. The electric side works fine but the propane side worked for a while and until recently, only intermittently.

Now the propane side does not work at all. The switch lights up and it fires, but does not stay on. I know that it is getting fuel. The water heater is 10 years old. Should I replace the control board again, or replace the whole unit for about $500?

Hi efstewart,
Have you replace the anode rod every two years? If so, consider getting it fixed. If not consider replacing it. As to the repair, consider making sure the tech is RVIA certified in propane and water heater repair. Do not assume the problem is the same as before. It could be something simple like a spider building a web in the propane orfice.

Don't want this to sound like snide comment and you've probably thought of this, but just a quick thought, if it fires up and then goes off, is it because your electric heating element has already heated the water to the temperature set by the thermostat?

Have you tried turning off the electric completely for several hours and then turn on the propane to see if it will run?

Also have you tried replacing the thermostat(s) - fairly easy and cheap job BTW.
