Surge Guard 40350RVC repair

When on shore power only one leg was passing thru the contactor (intermittent). I contacted CHINT in China, they do not make replacement contacts, I figured that was going to be my problem. They put me in touch with a US distributor who wanted $256 for one replacement contactor. I found a replacement at US Breaker in GA. that works and fits perfect for $59. They look exactly the same except the name is missing(probably made by CHINT) and there's a plastic guard over the screws that snaps on. They were not sure if one of theirs would work with the CHINT contactor because of the Mechanical interlock between the two contactors so I bought two contactors and their interlock. The interlock is exactly the same and they do work together. I only needed to buy one contactor and no interlock. Here's a picture of the contactors and part numbers. Alot cheaper than $1000 for a new one.

Wonderful information. I may need to order one as a spare.

Thanks for the timely post. I was helping someone on FB last night troubleshoot his ATS issues and he may be in need of a replacement contactor. A link to this thread has been passed on.

What a coincidence, we met up with friends in Quartzsite on Tuesday and his SurgeGuard 40101 had quit and wasn't transferring the shore power side. It uses the same contactors that you're showing. There were none available at Q but found a mobile tech who had a new 40101 on his truck. It was cold and a bear to remove the ATS. They didn't want to pull the cord reel. It took him about 2.5 hours to R&R the transfer switch. He only charged our friends $620.00 for the service call, labor and part. Thought it was a pretty good deal.

This is great information. Thanks! I have a bad breaker in a 40350 sitting on the shelf waiting for time to fine this exact information. Now to carry a spare relay to make sure my current one never fails

10 FAN.....Thanks for the info. We just got back from a trip where our friends had a contactor failure, so I ordered a spare for my coach. It's one of those things that could be hard to get while camping.

Sounds like your friends got lucky. The hard part is removing the transfer switch. The contactors are riveted in place so you need access to the back to drill them out. This is the type of job that needs to be done on a work bench or picnic table. The mechanical interlock is sandwiched between the two contactors and there are about 10 other small wires besides the main 9 and 6 jumpers. They were color coded the same as the main wires in front of them. Only the 4 contactor control wires were not so I marked them. As always take pictures.
I removed the cord reel, cut the two 12v wires to the switch and put spade connectors on them.

I told my friend to save the good contactor, but he said it was riveted in, as you stated, and didn't want to mess with it.

To bad he didn't save it, a lot of good parts. My contactor was closing when it should but only passing one hot and the neutral so I new the control part was working. I thought it was going to be the contacts on the leg not connecting (I turn off high loads before switching). I took it apart and the contacts looked perfect. Something I can't see must be stopping one side from going all the way in. It was still a cheap fix but not as cheap as it could of been.

I was chastised on the FB Newmar (or maybe Canyon Star) group for pointing out US Breaker as a possible source and suggesting DIY repair rather than replacement due to safety.

Glad there are some out there confident/smart/experienced enough to do DIY parts replacement inside the transfer switch.

I guess I need to look inside my 2021 and ID the contactors to see what they are. I know im going to run into a low voltage pedestal or nearby lightning someday.

My ATS had been intermittent for about the last two weeks of my last summer's trip. I was successful getting it to engage with shore power by tapping "gently" on the case with a rubber mallet (no damage to the case). Convinced that it would not self-heal, I purchased a replacement with the intention to replace the faulty ATS when I had some time to do it while the coach was stored from Nov. - Feb. I had some other service issues that I had NIRVC Washington DC/VA address. While in the shop, they wanted to keep the coach powered up and asked me if I'd been having any difficulty with the ATS. The outcome of that conversation was that they replaced the ATS with my spare. The tech who did the repair indicated that the shore power relay/contactor was chattering.

When he gave me the faulty ATS, I mentioned that one of the iRV2 contributors (thanks 10 fan) had found a source for the contactor and that I intended to buy one. His suggestion, which makes sense to me, was to buy two and replace both.

That's my plan...buy two.

Take care,
Stu

Are you also going to buy the mechanical interlock? I am submitting my request now, and assumed I would get 1 interlock and 2 contactors.

According to the OP (10 fan), see the quoted post below, the interlock is identical to the original and isn't needed.

The contactor is riveted to the case (three rivets each). The physical replacement of the contactors should be pretty easy with the ATS removed from the coach. I haven't, yet, disassembled mine, so I don't have any personal knowledge of the interlock compatibility.

I got my spare today....I didn't realize the contactor was so large. About 4"x4" x3".....and heavy.
