Surge Guard
We have a 2018 Dutch Star. I think it has a built in surge protector but do I need an after market one? Is it over protection?

Hi msobie236,
Make sure you know if you have a built in surge protector or not. If it is built in, make sure you know how to by-pass it in case it takes a hit. Call Newmar CS with your coach number. If it is not built in, consider purchasing an after market surge protector.
FYI, when you connect to shore power, is the coach immediately supplied with power? If so you do not have a built in protector. Surge protectors usually require about 2 minutes of delay while they check out the pedestal electric.

My 2018 DS has one. It has a 2 or 3 second delay after plugging in.

There are several different campground electrical conditions you have to watch out for including both surges and low voltage. This recent thread covers what a group of folks have been installing recently:

I have a Progressive 50amp pedestal version that I had the guys wire into the bay. So transfer switch to it to the reel. Coach has surge protection on it also but the Progressive will take the hit. Cheaper to replace than the on board protection. If you do that you just have to remember that it takes longer for the coach to power up. Progressive delay then the coach delay then power up.

I have a built in surge guard but also an external one without it there is no protection for the power cord reel. This is what Surge Guard told me when I asked them.

Look in the closet, you should find a sheet with all the equipment your coach has. Look for the Surgeguard, look up the model # to see if yours has it. I have a Surgeguard transfer switch, but opted for no protection as I use my own unit.
Or, just call Newmar

SurgeGuard makes two types of installed transfer switches. One just protects you from a power surge. The other is a full EMS, electronic management system, that protects from high and low voltage, negative ground, reverse polarity and surges. Check to see which one you have. If you have the first one then you need to upgrade or buy an external EMS to plug into the pedestal.
