Now you have brought up some terms that have confused me. When you all speak of an EMS system, are you talking about the surge protectors? I raise this because just yesterday the tech from Northtrail RV reiterated the fact explained at the factory that the Electrical Management System (EMS) should remain turned off when connected to 50 amp power. But when on a 30 amp service, it should be turned on. Of course this would be to shed extra draw on the electrical systems when connected to less than 50 amps so as to prioritize systems.

My guess is that you all are interchanging the term of EMS and surge protectors when they may be different?

Chuck, they are speaking ONLY of surge protectors and surge protection.

Any inadvertent reference to the EMS that manages 30 amps is not intented...

With all these experts out front on this one,I'm staying on the sidelines...

We are talking about after market Electrical Management Systems, mainly by Progressive.

These are high/low voltage protection and surge suppressors, not to be confused with Newmar's Energy Management System which is load shedding device, I believe.

As mentioned, the EMS is not a surge protector. The North Trail tech is correct. If you use the EMS while on 50 amp service you will be limited to 50 amps, 25 per leg. The 50 amp service is capable of 50 amps per leg at 110 volts.

Good point! It's confusing with the same acronym for two different devices.

To clarify, when I referred to the EMS, I'm referring the Energy Management System by Progressive which is the electrical protection and surge protection system. This gizmo:

The Electrical Management System , also called EMS is the system within the coaches designed to manage loads permitting the coaches to run on lower available amperage electrical service, i.e. running a 50 amp coach on 30 amps. The electrical management system is not surge protection but rather switches loads according to the available power.

OK Peter & the rest of you electrical wizards - I am completely confused now. What are the 2 electric management panels in the overhead above the drivers seat? One is labeled Magnum, and the other Intellitech. What are they for? Is one a power management system? Which one needs to be shut off when connected to 50 amps?

As you can see the electrics of a coach are a real mystery to me. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Mark...
The Magnum is your remote for the INVERTER..you can turn it on and off and also activate your auto gen start, but mine is actually configured with a remote panel in the bath that has various knobs to turn to set parameters such as temperature and voltage levels to activate..I dont think either needs to be turned off when on shore power..the inverter will automatically turn off when shore is applied

This thread has been quite interesting for me from my campground owner perspective and coach owner perspective.

Campground Owner: We do inspect all of our boxes but, I will be making sure we check all circuits for open neutrals. I would feel horrible if one of our customers had this happen. And this isn't because I would have to pay for the damage but, because we let a customer down.

I can tell you that mis-wiring a box is awful hard to do. They are pretty simple. I am savvy but, no electrician. I know it does happen, just pointing out that there should be testing when done w/the work.

Coach Owner:
Could I get a recommendation on which of the Progressive Industries Product to buy for my coach? Are there advantages to the hardwired vs. portable? If hardwired is better, there are multiple models. How do I choose? Prices are relatively close, so I just want what works best for the coach. Is the most expensive one necessarily worth it?

Campground Owner Again:
Any of the experts that posted want a part time job?

Scott I installed the Progressive EMS HW 50C hardwired unit.

I didn't want to fool with a portable unit, and this hardwired unit has a remote display I have mounted on a wall where I can easily see the status, and it has a bypass switch on the remote.

$375 from Rvupgrades.

Scott

I would suggest two reasons to go with one that's built in. One is it's just less hassle to hookup at a campground. Also, it's a lot more difficult to steal by someone if it's permanently mounted and locked in your electrical bay. As far as function, I'm pretty certain they both function the same.

What about this one below that is $140 more? I know it was mentioned that at least one knowledgeable person preferred Progressive, but, wondering if there is any advantages to the pricier unit.

Also, where did you install it? Where and how did you run the remote display cord and mount the display itself?
