Surge Protector Install on 4018 Dutch Star
I installed a Progressive Industries 50 amp hardwired surge protector today. The instructions are pretty simple, but the photos will show where I placed the unit and moved some items to make space.
Here is a photo of the DS 4018 power bay without the surge protector.
I temporarily moved the 12 volt bay light out of the way and removed the HUGE box for the cable TV connector. I bought 4' of #6, 4 wire power cable from Home Depot to use for the connection between the surge protector and transfer switch. I installed the surge protector before the transfer switch. I trust my generator output and this is the way I wired my previous coach.
The Progressive Industries unit fit well vertically in front of the transfer switch. I have the power cord reel which made the project more difficult to access the transfer switch wiring, but was doable.
Here is a photo of the unit installed.
I was able to reinstall the light sideways above the unit and I tossed the HUGE cable box that Newmar had used. I bought a small household blue plastic outlet box and a flat wall plate with a coax connector already installed. I drilled a hole through the rear of the blue box for the cable and then screwed the box to the wall.
In this last photo, I mounted the remote panel to the door where I could see it while connecting shore power. It's got enough cable to install inside the coach, but I want to see what it's doing when I first plug in.
I also laminated the business card with the error codes and mounted it next to the remote panel.

Hi Dutch Star Don,
Congrats on the install. Quite a bit of creativity was needed to fit everything in the bay.

Dutch Star Don ... I kind of did the same thing you did. Do like the idea of the laminated business card with the error codes mounted on the door and the cable TV outlet closer to the front. I might go back and modify mine some. Am really enjoying all your ideas so keep them coming.

Steve.....I mounted the card on the door because I didn't want to hunt for the codes. Once I plug in, I can take a quick look at the monitor and close the door.
I'll rarely, if ever use the cable TV connection, but I wanted it accessible if necessary. On my Monaco I found this cable reel and it was great for keeping the cable out of the way and easy to use if necessary. Coax Cable RG 6 TV camper RV Accessories RV | eBay It was permanently mounted to the ceiling of my power bay.

Yeah, Don. What's next? I'm looking forward to seeing how you turn that engine into 500 horses of pure, high torque, rubber burning power.

Don,
Great job on the install using a little ingenuity.
The only problem I see is the PE-7 Error Code. I would find another place that has better power.

I get the PE-7 error at storage when I plug in to the outlet in my storage unit. Nothing is running except the converter and maybe a few lights when I am there. Is that a problem
Nice job install Don, looks great.

Don,
PE = Previous Error.
That means you had the E-7 error code at the previous location wherever you were parked. Or if you have multiple EMS trips it only remembers the last one once power is restored.
The EMS will display the current error code when power is disrupted. Once power has been restored it will display the PE code of the last error.

When I first connected the unit at my house, no codes. When I finished up the project and reconnected again, I got the code. Will check on it again later and see what happens.

Hey Guys,
I'm new to the idea of having a surge protector at all so could someone give me some ideas as to the difference between a $100 and a $300+ 50 amp protector? I've only had smaller (no air conditioner) rigs so no need till now.
Thanks
