Tag wheels

Our 4369 Ventana has steerable tags. I saw a Holiday Rambler today with tag wheels that were 3 inches off the ground while moving. Could someone explain why they would be off the ground and I guess it’s a totally different system than Newmar tags. Thanks in advance

They are called lifting tags, lifting them on a turn decreases wheel base to the drive axle. Passive and active steering tags try do the same thing. Some coaches have tag unload, which takes pressure off tag bags so they do not scuff so much when turning.

Not all coaches have the "steerable" tag axles, so the axle "lifts" to help negotiate tight turns when moving slow.. some are a manual(push and hold button) some are automatic lift if below 5 mph.. and some only lift when backing up..(steerable & non-steerable- not controlled by steering wheel)

I believe the lifting tags were very expensive to produce and you typically only saw them on high end coaches. It was pretty cool to see on passing through a campground with the tag lifted off of the ground.

Newmar first offered a tag that took the pressure off the axle/tires by deflating the tag air bags. A couple of years ago, they added the steerable tag, which also releases the pressure on the tag axle. Between the two, they shorten the turning radius by about 13%.

It's also pretty cool to watch the steerable tag at low speeds. When you look in the mirror, you see one wheel turning behind the duals.

During our delivery at Tom's, Scotty made me stand in the middle of the yard while they did circles around me with the coach so I could see the steerable tag in action. Very cool to watch, but much cooler to be in the pilot's seat.

Watch the last 10 seconds of the video. This is an active steering tag.
Turn the steering wheel, and tag hydraulically turns in opposite direction.
A 45 ft Newell has a turning radius of 37 ft, less than many 40 footers.

Our coach (build # 6036) was one of the last built that only deflates the tag air bags, a few coaches later they went to the lifting tag as standard...have been mulling over several years whether it is worth having our coach updated to the lifting tag.
